"Academic writing is getting harder to read—the humanities most of all" Couldn't agree more. Reading some of the IR/geopolitics papers you have to wonder whether overly complex phrasing and sentences aren't there just to mask the absence of thought and a lack of understanding of the subject matter. Having worked for diplomats and decision-makers in the field, I can say clarity is paramount. There are no cookie points for using convoluted words when simpler ones would convey the same idea. And in general, as the French saying goes "Ce qui se conçoit bien s’énonce clairement" (What you understand well, you enunciate clearly) economist.com/science-and-te…

Understanding how science, knowledge & the brain work is a bigger story than the subtopic of how economics works. Hayek played a central role in solving this bigger problem—undoing the neo-Kantian paradigm in the process—and solving the economic sub-problem is just a sub-story.
