The slave trade had a very destructive impact on Africa. Whole regions were depopulated and a number of kingdoms collapsed. The population lived in a constant state of fear and some parts of Africa even suffered from famine. Whereas Western nations used slavery and the slave trade to build up industries, this was the beginning of Africa's underdevelopment.
