I applaud Governor McMaster’s decision to appoint Darline Graham Nordone to replace her brother and our friend, Lindsey Graham, in the U.S. Senate. Lindsey’s legacy will continue through Darline, and I look forward to welcoming her soon.

Like so many, I’m deeply saddened by the passing of my friend of 25 years, Lindsey Graham. Lindsey devoted his life to serving our country with conviction, courage, and an unwavering sense of duty. But, importantly, the man behind the public figure was deeply devoted to his family, a kind and generous friend and blessed with a great sense of humor, punctuated by a sharp wit. While his time on earth has been cut short, he will be remembered by history as a consequential and impactful leader with an enormous heart for America. Rest in peace, my friend. Thank you for a lifetime of service. May God comfort those who love you and may He grant you eternal peace.

As a fifth generation South Carolina farmer and someone running to be our next Commissioner of Agriculture, I believe Clemson University has an opportunity to restore confidence in this process by being transparent and open in selecting its next president. I also believe the Board should strongly consider a candidate with a background in agriculture. Agriculture and forestry is South Carolina's largest industry, contributing more than $52 billion to our state's economy. Our land grant university should have leadership that understands the importance of feeding, clothing, and fueling our future. Clemson was founded in 1889 as the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina. That wasn't by accident. It was created to educate the next generation of agricultural leaders and serve the people of this state. As Clemson chooses its next president, I hope they remember that mission and the farmers, foresters, and rural communities who helped build this great land grant university.

Just saw some statistics that Clemson’s 2030 class had 3 times as many out of state admits as in state. That doesn’t necessarily translate to enrollees. But the problem is evident. You cannot be a land grant university without serving the state.
