@MostlyHoopsShow @clubtrillion We want a top 10 program, we’d be satisfied as a perennial top 25. We are neither, and haven’t been for a while. Ohio State can’t field a top 25 basketball team, think about that. Ohio freaking State.

Their 2026 class hasn't played a game. We were discussing how they invested, not will invest. And Ohio State basketball has also had back-to-back good classes. They are small so they aren't ranked as high, but Diebler has proven to be a great recruiter. Also, the transfer portal is a better sign of your NIL budget because those players ask for more money.

I hear this a lot with Ohio State basketball. If too many fans are only going to watch when they're good, it's going to be hard for them to become "worth watching." Also, if the expectation is the Thad Matta era, 25% of the #Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament appearances, I think that's setting up for disappointment in an age where talent distribution is more evenly spread.

@_Pat_Murphy I’m not even sure what you’re saying here. Yes, mediocre teams don’t draw fans. Nebraska football is like the only exception to this. How has all that fan support done for them?

@CoilDP You're right. There are plenty of sports teams that play in 2/3 empty arenas that are successful. C'mon now.

@_Pat_Murphy @mrworldwide3654 2025 and 2026 classes. That would be the last 2 recruiting classes. They’re recruiting as good as anyone their last two classes, even when basketball was apparently taking their money.

I'm not sure where you're getting your recruiting rankings, but I see 19th in 2024 and 8th in 2025, boosted by Underwood, who is their second-highest-rated prospect ever. In the modern recruiting era, basically the last 20 or years, Michigan hasn't recruited like top programs. That's why they've not sustained their level. Coming off a national championship, they won 8 games. They did that because their coach left for the NFL. The next coach wasn't fired for on-field performance. They've not been able to gain much traction in the transfer portal because they aren't investing. It's the same as why Ohio State hasn't been able to land top transfers.

@_Pat_Murphy Companies should tell customers to buy their crap before they innovate. That’s what is being argued here. It’s never the customer’s fault. Never. Ever. You want investment then you need to invest first. They haven’t and they’re paying the price.

@CoilDP While I disagree with you on Diebler, more fans = more money. So if you believe Diebler was a discount hire, then yes, better attendance would help.

Michigan had a good class last year, largely boosted by one player, who took up the vast majority of their NIL money. Two years ago, it wasn't great. Michigan's transfer portal haul has been on part with Ohio State in basketball. They've lost 9 games in the last two years... I'm not sure there's much of an argument here.

@_Pat_Murphy It’s a boycotting of the front office and staff. Kind of the same thing here with OSU. Diebler hire brought zero buzz to the program at a critical point. Packing an arena in January isn’t going to help them draw up a better inbounds play in Greenville in March.

First, comparing how pro and college sports teams make money is silly. The Cardinals have their own TV deal, so if people are watching on TV, that matters. Ohio State doesn't. It gets the same amount from a TV deal as the other Big Ten teams. Also, fans not going to Cardinals games because they aren't good is definitely a problem. But they're also a historic organization and not second to another team three blocks away.

@_Pat_Murphy It’s literally a Nielsen report. No different than TV rating for football that you guys all retweet constantly. This is the chicken or the egg. It’s not the fans job to make the basketball team good. That’s on the administration and coaching staff. The more talented team lost

I understand what the graphic says. I don't know if it's true. It also doesn't tell you anything. People watch Ohio State games on TV? Great. Does that help the program? No. 2/3 empty arenas. Tell a story. The lack of interest in the coverage tells a story. The NIL budget tells a story. It's fine. Ohio State is a football school and people only have some much income/bandwidth. But don't expect the same outcome when it's not the same level of support.

@mrworldwide3654 @CoilDP Michigan won 8 games two years ago as part of two years out of the NCAA Tournament. Then they had NIL investment into the program. But it also took away from what was given to football. Do Ohio State fans want that?

@_Pat_Murphy You’re from STL. Check out the crowds at Cardinals games now. Is that because the fans suck? I grew up in STL, probably the best fans in baseball. What happened? The product turned to shit. Is that the fan’s fault?

@_Pat_Murphy It’s a Nielson rating, Pat. Not a random graphic. There’s plenty of interest in Ohio State basketball. There’s a reason Ohio State gets so many CBS and Fox games, and it’s not because fans don’t tune in or care. Again, don’t blame the fans. It’s embarrassing from you guys.

If you watched as much Jake Diebler basketball as I watch, it wouldn’t be all that baffling.

Urban Meyer is teeing off on reality that NIL doesn’t really exist in college sports, it’s pay for play. NIL should be, per Meyer, actually paying players to do commercials and the like, he’s in favor for that.
