Songwriting tip: Most songwriter music is about the melody first. Start there. Try writing the vocal melody line first, completely apart from any instrument. Just sing what comes to mind. Don't even worry about the words yet. This can help break you out of the rut of whatever your favorite chord progressions or chord voicings are, as well as your favorite time signatures and tempos. After you have a verse/chorus/bridge melody written, then go to the instrument and figure out how to support it. Now you have the bones of a song. What's next? Ask this question: What is this song talking about? It's funny, but you can often hear what a song is trying to talk about from the melody, tempo, and time signature. Is it happy? Melancholy? Nostalgic? Dark? Light? Fast? Angry? Lilting? Driving? Write the words that the song wants. You can write in a lot of other orders, but this one has produced what I would consider to be my best songs with maybe two exceptions.
