@Joanna__Hardy It's not about watching people fail. This is about Andy Burnham happily prepared to sacrifice his mayoral mandate,to use a random constituency who knows nothing about him,in order to mount an attempt at becoming PM via the backdoor-ugly,shameless,opportunism.

This country is addicted to watching people fail. We all hanker for a downfall. What if Andy Burnham does persuade the NEC? What if he is victorious over Reform in a by-election? What if he beats Starmer in a contest? And then, what if he brings a solid, positive fight to Farage?

@robfordmancs If Burnham fails to win the by-election,then surely he's shown his Manchester electorate that he was prepared to abandon them in order to pursue his personal ambitions elsewhere?

Just received this - interesting both for what it says and that Mayor's office (Burnham's office) saw the need to say it. Burnham can *run* for Westminster and remain Mayor while doing it, but if he wins he has to immediately resign. Good for Burnham & Lab prospects imho 1/2

@afneil I hope the Makerfield electorate realise they're being manipulated/taken for granted and protest-vote in whatever way possible to slap Burnham down hard.

British politics will reach a new reductio ad absurdum in the Makerfield by election: Vote Labour to destroy the sitting Labour Prime Minister. Support Labour PM Starmer but NOT voting Labour. We are having a by-election not because there’s any demand or need in the national interest but entirely to suit the convenience of the byzantine politics of the ruling party and the political pygmies in whose interest it is run. We are no longer a serious nation. No wonder the bond markets are squiffy.

@FilmUpdates The only sequel that might work is Grace,Rocky and the Eridians going in search of other life,as is vaguely suggested near the end of the book.Weir stories are ultimately about grand-scale problem solving though.I'd have no interest in any prequel/sidequel.

Sandra Hüller when asked if she would ever return for a ‘PROJECT HAIL MARY’ sequel: "I don't know what's going to happen in the future. I have fun with a lot of different things and I feel very, very lucky that I can explore these different ways of working. That's all."

@TheCinephiler Too old,too busy, too expensive, would be looking more creative clout too.The new Bond should be around 30,and prepared to commit,as a priority,to making 3-4 films in a decade (assuming Amazon plan better than Eon did).

@CarolineLucas "There are times when it’s more important to put country before party." Could someone please tell that to the Labour Party who are in the process of miring the country into a more amateurish version of a typical Tory psychodrama?

I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

@CinemaWireNews I hope it does OK.I know it's yet another take on existing IP,but unlike a lot of other stuff releasing these days, it's actually looks both colourful and good fun. That's pretty much what I want in that kind of film,to be enjoyably entertained.

‘MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE’ is early tracking to earn just $35M on its domestic opening weekend. The film has a $170M+ budget, meaning it’d need to make ~$425M to break even. (Source: deadline.com/2026/05/box-of…)

@Thunderballs007 My only positive is that if,as it sounds, the process is either just starting or nowhere near complete,it does mean that the names constantly in circulation (especially Turner/Elordi) are just rumours and guesswork.

@jan_murray Sadly I think Grover will keep failing until/unless there's a political will to change Australian laws. In their current form, they're stacked completely in favour of self-ID/gender over biological sex.

An Australian judge has ruled in favour of the gentleman on the right. Who claims he was discriminated against by the woman on the left - who removed him from her ‘female only’ app. On the basis that he was male. Tickle (right) claims he is female. In fact, the appeal judge went further than the original ruling - finding direct rather than indirect discrimination and ordering Sall Grover to pay $20,000 in damages (double the original amount), plus costs of up to $100,000 (to cover both the main and cross-appeals). On the basis that Grover excluded Tickle from the Giggle app. And then refused to re-admit him on the basis of ‘her gender-related appearance’. Now Grover is off to the High Court. To defend herself against claims of ‘sex discrimination’ - against an individual who anyone can clearly see, on sight, is male. Insanity. @salltweets has my full support - along with the support of many people here in the UK. And this case is a reminder of why women (and men) must continue defending single-sex rights and spaces. Relentlessly. While the impact is felt differently in different parts of the world - due to differing legal systems - it is clear that we are witnessing a global attack on the rights of women and girls. We cannot afford to stay silent about it.

@georgegalloway George - if you believe human beings are fundamentally equal in terms of dignity and opportunity, how can you also believe that someone's identity and life choices should be dictated to them by the genitals they were born with?

Andy Burnham has put his career and reputation on the line to demonstrate an ability to beat Reform in a tight marginal. This is exactly the kind of courage Labour needs if it is to win the next election.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 NEW: Sir John Curtice says Labour would have "less than 5% chance" in the Makerfield by-election "if it were anyone other than Andy Burnham" He adds it's one of the tightest Labour-Reform contests and a "much tougher" election to win than Gorton and Denton [@politico]

@RachelLeishman Online film twitter discourse only goes for the obvious, but these actors are mostly (far) too old,too famous, too expensive, too busy etc.The next Bond needs to be around 30,and able to commit-as a priority-to at least 3-4 films in a decade.

@IMAO_ Depends on which version of SW you wish to gatekeep,or advocate for. It's a sprawling franchise,so there's-rightly-something for all tastes and age points.Andor is very much a grounded, adult, show, but there's plenty of lighter,younger-skewing choices too.

@ArthurMacwaters He's too old,far too famous, too expensive, and would probably be looking the kind of creative clout Craig had.Next Bond needs to be around 30,and Amazon need to make films far more regularly than Eon did-say 3-4 at least with the new actor over a decade.

@jbillinson I think it's more the case that Lucas had the basic backstory mapped out so he knew how to lead into ANH.But when he came to making the prequels, the obsession with a trilogy meant he had to come up with a lot of padding-since much of his backstory was really just ROTS only.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is going through what his 2017 film, Dunkirk, went through. Prior to its July 2017 release, Dunkirk was criticized for lacking emotional depth, sparse dialogue, and potential historical inaccuracies. Critics argued Nolan prioritized technical filmmaking over human connection and questioned its purely English perspective, which largely ignored the 120,000 French soldiers also evacuated. The film was misunderstood before it was seen, but most negativity faded once audiences experienced it and understood Nolan’s approach. The Odyssey faces similar pre-release criticism. Nolan remains a rare, passionate filmmaker who respects his audience—mesmerizing them, making them think, entertaining them, and inspiring future filmmakers. It should be noted that Nolan isn’t aiming for a documentary-style reenactment of Bronze Age Greece. He’s treating The Odyssey as a “mythic action epic,” embracing fantasy elements and viewing the source material as a 3,000-year-old tale of monsters, gods, and heroes—not a historical textbook.
