Albertans with a hunting license have been invited to apply for authorization to kill a "conflict" grizzly bear. The Minister @dtloewen is standing by a decision that won't reduce conflict, isn't based on science, and goes against the recovery plan. Email him, cc me. Be heard!

@JohnEMarriott And where is the number of 15 grizzlies a year coming from? There is no way 15 grizzlies are being killed every year by F&W due to conflicts?

@ColleenGara Absolutely. It's insane. Minister Loewen needs to step down from his role, his ties to the trophy hunting industry are obviously clouding his judgement or lack thereof.

He also said: Hunters are highly trained like F&W officers. Then said, "To suggest they are unqualified is ridiculous. Hunters can do this job just as effectively as an officer.” WTAF?!

A terrible decision, riddled with perverse incentives for hunters and rife with possibilities to corrupt the system for granting hunting permits.
There is no way any wildlife biologist or conservation expert recommended this hare-brained scheme for grizzly management.

WHY is the Alberta government allowing THREATENED grizzly bears to be hunted if they are deemed a "problem"? The Wildlife Act was changed recently WITHOUT public consultation nor legislative review by Minister Todd Loewen.

They might not be calling it a "hunt", but recent moves by @dtloewen allow for public killing of bears. This won't resolve conflict. It will result in more dead bears. There is no data to support this and it goes against the Provincial Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.
