So let's imagine you got ½ the population to mine gold, and put it in a chest. You took 50% of the food from the others to give the gold diggers, but the diggers demanded more food. So you took 60% from the others. Now, the rest were poorer, so many signed up to be diggers, but they also wanted more. Now, only 40% of the population were making food, but giving 70% to the diggers. There was lots of gold in the chest, so the world thought it was getting richer, but there was much less food because so few people were making it. Now even more food bringer are signing up to dig gold, because they're going to get more food if they do. I need to work on this, but I think that this is what we are doing as a civilisation.
