Louie Simmons on Conditioning for Football Players… “Football is a knock you out, back up, knock you out, back up sport. When you run gassers, you turn explosive athletes into endurance athletes.” You must train the correct energy systems for success in Sport!🙌🏻

You can tell a lot about a team by the way they warmup before a game.

What "conditioning" means to me: The ability to hold perfect position, technique, and max speed/power longer than your opponent. Once you lose the capacity to maintain technique and position, your advantage is gone. Sub maximal "conditioning" doesn't build that. In fact, it works against it. It detrains the CNS and makes you slower, less powerful, and more prone to injury when it matters. If being a high performer is king, then by its very nature "conditioning" will always be my sworn enemy!! Train to stay fast and dominant under real duress, not just to "not get tired."
StrengthCoachNetwork@StrCoachNetwork

Enough is enough. Some coaches talk about “conditioning” like it’s the enemy. Why? Because they think conditioning only means: • 110s • 300-yard shuttles • running miles Those are methods, not the principle. That’s like saying you hate strength training because you don’t squat, bench, or deadlift. Good conditioning simply means an athlete can produce and recover from effort repeatedly in sport. Tempo work can be conditioning. Small-sided games can be conditioning. Circuits can be conditioning. This can be done on feet and off. Different tools. Same principle. The idea that conditioning is automatically “bad for athletes” is poor coaching. If you want a better breakdown, read this: strengthcoachnetwork.com/blog/What-Cond… Then Friday we go deep on the topic with Jonah Rosner (@jonisportsci) — former NFL performance coach now working with elite marathon runners — on the relationship between sprinting, strength, and conditioning.

@CoachJimmyS There are a lot of kids who claim to have a 500lbs squat who can’t do this. Thats no shot at the kids either who are just doing what they are told, just the coaches prioritizing weight over technique.

@CollopyPete I would rather see this all over social media than a kid doing a 500 lb 1/2 squat. Great job coach!

At the HS and collegiate level, I’m yet to be around a head sport coach who doesn’t want to win. That’s their job. It’s the job of the players to make them play you by consistently displaying great practice habits, earning their trust in off-season, & play well when do you get PT

Track and field is a good choice for a second sport for football players. I’m not like some football coaches proclaiming it as essential for football guys or necessarily the best because I feel there are other sports as good or possibly better depending on the context. I never ran track and for me personally, I think basketball helped the most in making me an explosive, agile athlete with good hand eye coordination. Ultimately, I encourage multi sport participation but here’s the big caveat I see with track that matters. Going out for the track team to mostly socialize and put forth half ass effort isn’t doing anybody any good. Take it seriously and compete to the absolute best of your ability or else you’re wasting time. Most importantly, running circles in a straight line will get you in killer shape but you aren’t really getting faster or moving the needle athletically unless you are putting in the extra time to continue strength training concurrently with it. That’s where it gets tough, it’s not a season off and no matter if you’re track coaches put emphasis on the weight room or not, you gotta be disciplined and put the work in. It’s not helping you with football if that’s not the case.

Steve Nash didn’t just lead in assists. He led the NBA in high-fives, fist bumps, and pats on the back. And a UC Berkeley study found that teams who showed more physical enthusiasm… won more. Energy is contagious. Encouragement matters.

Along the theme of hiring qualified S&C coaches More high schools are getting serious about S&C. Each year it’s becoming less and less of an advantage with more great professionals being hired ROI takes 3-4 years for the entire athletics department to start rolling. Don’t wait

High School S&C coaches see 300-500+ students a day with fully bought in school systems. It’s critical you hire a qualified person, but also the right-fit to train and impact your students daily If you get this hire right it’ll be the most impactful hire you make in the school

The worst attitude is one that thinks “that’s not my job.” If it needs to be done, do it. Period! That mindset is not team/staff centered. Self centered folks become cancers on teams/staffs. If you always have to be reminded or told to do your part, you’re not a team player.
