Many talented people over the past few years were declined an offer or even an interview @xAI. My apologies. @BarisAkis and I are going through the company interview history and reaching back out to promising candidates.

@beffjezos xAI was not built right first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up. Same thing happened with Tesla.

I just gave a closed-book, pen-and-paper midterm exam in my 300-level course at UBC with 100 students. All exams were graded by an experienced graduate-level TA according to a rubric. *** The average was 64/100.*** My class averages at UBC are usually 80-85. Context: • This was the first midterm, covering ONLY 4 weeks of material. • Students had a list of possible questions in advance: no surprise questions. • Questions included (a) 3 concept definitions, (b) 3 paragraph-long questions, and (c) a 1.5-page essay. • I have taught this class multiple times. Nothing in my teaching style changed this semester. • We read entire paragraphs of text in class, so students don't have to do something on their own that wasn't covered during the lecture. • Students take a 10-question multiple-choice quiz at the end of every class (30% of the final grade). • Attendance is 95-99% every class. Attention during lectures and participation in pair-work activities are very high → anticipating the end-of-class quiz. *** But unfortunately, I suspect many students are not reading the material on the syllabus. They are asking LLMs to summarize it instead.*** After the midterm, students reported: • They thought they knew concept definitions but couldn't produce them on paper. • They thought they understood the arguments but struggled to connect them or identify points of agreement and disagreement. My view: It might be “cool” or “innovative” to teach students to summarize readings with ChatGPT or write essays with Claude. But we may be doing them a disservice: reducing their ability to retain material, think creatively, and reason from what they know. If you only read what AI has summarized for you, you don’t truly "know" the material. Moving forward: We have a second midterm coming up. I don't know how to convey to students that the best way to do better on the exam is to rely on and improve their own reading skills.

Ezra Klein: "Having AI summarize a book or paper for me is a disaster. It has no idea what I really wanted to know and wouldn't have made the connections I would've made. I'm interested in the thing I will see that other people wouldn't have seen, and I think AI typically sees what everybody else would see. I'm not saying that AI can't be useful, but I'm pretty against shortcuts. And obviously, you have to limit the amount of work you're doing. You can't read literally everything. But in some ways, I think it's more dangerous to think you've read something that you haven't than to not read it at all. I think the time you spend with things is pretty important." @ezraklein

@Sally_Sharif1 Did the essay scores come in above the average generally and match previous cohorts who did not have AI tools, or was that down also?? Was that the application of the knowledge in the exam?

I walked into a shop today. While waiting my turn, the two lads ahead were finishing up their conversation. They are fully convinced that we "didn't build them. Impossible. You'd have needed to be huge. They hadn't the machines." "The Tartarians built all those." Social media is a bit of a problem.

Just want to make a note here for time. Photo of on social media is wrong, regardless of whether some useful idiot is screaming "won't someone please think of the children". We already have some business models which are banned and profiting from them. More business models need to be simply designated as immoral. Maybe use a different word for the 21st century. "Counter to the common good" sounds ok to me.

@Austen Interesting. Will models be used to evaluate their own jailbreaks then? I've seen some grade themselves pretty on the ball in terms of things the other way around, such as an exploit.

I'm so frustrated at being a parent in this garbage digital age. I hate short-form video. TikTok / YouTube trash is just pure brain-rot and I can't stand it. I try to keep my kids away from it. I gave them access to Spotify b/c I want them to enjoy music and develop their musical tastes and personalities. That was working pretty well. They would go onto Spotify on the XBox and listen to music and explore that space. Good for them. But what does Spotify do? They put short form videos into their app. Now my kids are watching the videos instead of listening to the music. I have to decide if I have to take Spotify away from them (along with all their playlists) because Spotify pulled this bait-and-switch on me and turned an app that I felt good about giving to my kids into another brain-rotting platform of garbage. Every month something like this happens. It's impossible to navigate this as a parent, even if you're largely on top of things. It's exhausting and dispiriting.

@buccocapital I don't think the code provides the full frame of what the job requires. Other jobs, needing similar input for the exact task, are similarly available to the AI. Law, accounting, marketing etc

I thought Dwarkesh had a good point that software engineering is the only job where the full context needed to do the job is available to an AI agent (via the code base) And I didn’t think Dario had a good answer for why automating other jobs will be as easy

All shite. And they could if they wanted to let you do that since the letre is there. They could enable that capability on any plan. I wouldn't swap the ability to see usage for 40c per unit at peak, for example, to get some off peak for the car. If it were a truly smart metre it could be a lot smarter than nailing down prices for specific times and allow it to react to the network load, for example but nooooo! It's as smart as a bunch of things mugging you!

@ColmCasey @HangBlaa Upgrade for free, so all I have to do is ring them and say yes I want that and it is immediately activated. No installation or anything like that needs to be done, it just needs me to confirm they can activate it.

Anyone know if there is any downside to upgrading to a smart meter? I have been told by Electric Ireland that if I do this I cannot go back to the old meter and I can upgrade for free but are smart meters more expensive during certain hours??

@elonmusk @TheZvi Still, it needs a safety team. One Tesla or one rocket gone bad can only do so much damage. Grok outputs such vile and dangerous stuff when tricked into it, you definitely need a safety team focussed solely on that with their having some considerable power over releases etc.

@TheZvi Because everyone’s job is safety. It’s not some fake department with no power to assuage the concerns of outsiders. Tesla has no safety team and is the safest car. SpaceX has no safety team and has the safest rocket. Dragon is what NASA trusts most to fly astronauts.

It's designed to screw you over. When enough en made are converted it's all down side and I'm sure at that point you're existing tariff will disappear also and be replaced with something punitive. We changed it. No tariff could beat the existing 24 hour tariff. Once you go to a smart tariff you can't go back to a 24 hour one. I would advise don't get a new metre. I have an electric car. The smart tariffs are designed to screw you not help you.
