It’s depressing and infuriating that a man like this can rise to PM. A broken system.

"Years from now, it will be obvious why ... as we faced high-powered technologies and political ideologies aimed at paving the way for their dominance over humans, what emerged ... was an intense, global debate about, of all things, Zionism." Brilliant essay by @alananewhouse for @tabletmag.

CONFIRMED: Verisure pull ads from GB News and exclude the channel from ad strategy 👏 A huge thanks to everyone who urged Verisure to #StopFundingHate! ❤️‍🔥 🔔 Verisure’s ad placement was unintentional and they swiftly pulled ads as soon as it was brought to their attention.

@HansMahncke I don’t know enough about the Korean War. Do you have any good recommendations for books / movies about it?

This is such a fantastic development, in particular in light of all the examples of not fighting to total victory, perhaps most memorably when George H. W. Bush decided that pushing Saddam out of Kuwait was “good enough,” as if Roosevelt had declared that driving Hitler out of France was “good enough.” But the worst example has to be Korea. General MacArthur executed one of the most remarkable military maneuvers in history. North Korea had overrun almost all of South Korea, and he landed hundreds of miles behind enemy lines to completely rout their forces. He then wanted to finish the job by destroying the bridges the Chinese Communists were using to send reinforcements. Truman stopped him, and the consequences were catastrophic, leading to a 73-year stalemate in Korea, the ongoing suffering of millions in North Korea, and the survival of the Chinese Communists, who would otherwise have collapsed.
Cynical Publius@CynicalPublius

The last time America fought a war with the goal of unconditional surrender of an objectively evil enemy was 1945. Ever since we have never--not once, not even Gulf War I--fought a war with the goal of achieving total victory. Until Donald Trump and Iran. Americans used to understand that if you were going to fight, you fight to win. But think about that year--1945. That means that the only living Americans with a recollection of fighting to win are close to or over 100 years of age. Victory is not understood by most Americans. Couple that with our risk-averse, feminized, coddled contemporary society and it's easy to understand why soft men like this abhor victory over objective evil and the costs associated with it, and would rather tear down their own country and undermine the men and women fighting on his behalf.

This makes sense. To be clear I do understand why in normal submarine doctrine you make yourself scarce immediately. And I'm not so naive as to imagine submarines can literally take survivors on board - I have actually been on board an operational SSN. However...
Stuart M@StuartM1827017

There are two reasons submarines do not do pick ups. 1.) To do so directly places a submarine at risk of attack at its most vulnerable point where it cannot defend itself. 2.) A submarine has no capacity to secure hundreds of people. In this case the Iranian ship was, likely deliberately, sunk near a point where other elements could do a rescue.
