Tons of Amazon sellers think 30% ROI is the magic number. They're wrong Velocity often (not always) beats margin. Compounding a $1 profit monthly beats taking a $3 profit quarterly.

I post this once a year or so as a PSA to amazon sellers. This is a breakdown of my Amazon listings. Left column is my category %, I’m a little more top heavy than I’d like but each of those numbers represents a different category and how much of my inventory is allocated to it. Right column is of those listings how many I am sharing with Amazon as a seller. The closer we get to Q4 the more likely that right column number gets lower. However, do not ignore a listing simply because Amazon is selling the product too. Do not look at buy box % ownership and make any meaningful decisions with that information. Keepa is great but the way they collect that data and some others is not an accurate picture of what’s happening. Amazon will share the buy box, you will get rotated in. You can even sell above Amazon and get sales. If amazon is not on a listing you may get rotated in more often, but by eliminating any listing with Amazon you’re cutting off a huge number of profitable ASINs. Not to mention products with far less 3P competition. Happy Labor Day sourcing!

We moved just under 160k units in past 30 days and 175k units in December alone. It was a crazy Q4 with lots of excitement both on and off Amazon, but survived to make it to my favorite time of the year, Q1! Now the real fun starts! Friday is kids last day in public school for a bit. Monday we pull them out of school for two months to go live on a mountain on property we just closed on a couple weeks ago. We will ski pretty much every day for two months straight as a family. Wife will home school the kids while we are there, I'll cover "gym class", and I'll do some work early in morning and evenings. Most importantly we will build memories that I couldn't have dreamed of 10 years ago when working a corporate job.

99% of new sellers are coming into the space with the wrong mindset. If I had to start selling on Amazon from zero again, here’s my simple 3 action steps to go from $0-$10k sales per month. 1. Pay to learn. Most people have the mindset of “Why should I spend money before I earn money?” It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Spend money to make money is one of the biggest factors to scale a successful business. 2. Pay to get leads. Two things I hear the most are: - I’m having a hard time finding a wining product. - I don’t want to find products that I can’t consistently buy and sell for long periods of time. 1 sourcing criteria I hear most often of: > 30% ROI, under 100k BSR, no Hazmat/DG, no IP/PL/Brand on listing. These are why you can’t grow. I would totally spend $100 a month join a leads list and get leads to see where successful product sourcers are sourcing from. There’s no stopping me from sourcing off of the leads I get. Even if the leads aren’t good, but my goal is not to make money. I need to learn about how and where I can find products that make me money. 3. Build credit. Two things I hear most often from sellers are: - My Amazon payouts are so slow that I can’t make payments so I can’t leverage my cc to buy new inventory. - I just maxed out all my cards on inventory and now I don’t have money to invest in new opportunities. If I were to start over, I will put a lot of effort into managing the following two things: 1. Cash flow 2. Inventory sell through rate Because, high sell through rate = better cash flow = paying down cards faster = more money to invest in new opportunities.
