One of the reasons why many history books used in the UK are biased is that many of the academics who wrote them have been apologists for communist atrocities and terror.

After the fall of communism, Sir Roger Scruton received awards from Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. Here he is with Vaclav Havel. Also in the photo is Barbara Day who did a lot of the organising. Photo from the Brno exhibition

Many people know of Roger Scruton as a conservative philosopher. But in the 1980s he was involved in an enterprise that is not well known.

The amazing Witold Pilecki - worthy of a statue in London.
Institute of National Remembrance@ipngovpl_eng

When he entered the courtroom, he was missing teeth and his nails had been removed. That was the outcome of a brutal investigation he had suffered in a communist prison. #OTD🗓in 1948, the trial of Witold Pilecki and his companions began in Warsaw. Even though the proceedings were officially open to the public, it was only the defendants’ families and the Ministry officials who were allowed in, based on entry tickets (!) specifically issued for the occasion.

The Soviets didn’t liberate Poland—they enslaved it. Today, we commemorate the National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers (Narodowy Dzień Żołnierzy Wyklętych). These anti-communist resistance fighters opposed the Soviet-backed regime that took over Poland after WWII. Refusing to lay down their arms, they fought for a free Poland for nearly 20 years after the war—the last, “Lalek,” was killed in 1963. One of the most well-known figures was Witold Pilecki, the only man who volunteered to infiltrate the German concentration camp in Auschwitz. He gathered intelligence about the German atrocities committed at the camp and organised the underground resistance movement.

The modern rehabilitation of Stalin in Russia. One argument is "at least he beat Hitler". Surely not. Millions of Russians died to beat Hitler. Stalin made this more difficult. He purged many top generals just before the war and was caught completely off guard when Hitler broke their pact.
Steve Rosenberg@BBCSteveR

This week one Russian newspaper described “the machine of persecution & punishment” in Russia. “Everything that a few months ago was not just legal, but natural, is being criminalised.” Plus: “the bomb that destroyed the Stalin myth.” #ReadingRussia

This is the beginning of our new video about two young girls who were suddenly arrested and deported in cattle cars. Their stories give a small window into one of the biggest but least well-known events of the 20th century: Stalin's deportation of 3 million people from Eastern Europe and the Baltic States.
