"The hermeneutics of suspicion seems to cut both ways... We might try to deny it but we are constituted by myths and symbols all the way down." I wrote about Ricoeur for @compactmag compactmag.com/article/paul-r…

It seems like a lot of people are bitterly resistant to acknowledging this, because it would interrupt other narratives they're strangely over-invested in

kind of a crushing disappointment to realize how much of the "dissident/politically homeless" thing was just carrying water for another war in the middle east.

Counterpoint: These kids are more or less fine. They’re drunkenly enjoying their spring break. Better to be socializing and partying with friends in real life than doomscrolling on X in isolation and hyperventilating about how awful America is.
Thomas Chatterton Williams@thomaschattwill

A lot of the problems in the world right now can be explained by this video. For one thing, it’s a big reason why the US government is so unaccountable to public opinion. These are *college students.* A significant amount of the country is totally checked out and comfortable enough not to think it matters.

I have written pieces for alternative media outlets. One day I realized such outlets were not as independent as I'd thought, and saw that if I criticized Israel doors would close, just as they would if I questioned vaccine mandates. Well, so it goes. A person can be wrong, I certainly can be, you certainly can be, but we reach each other through dialogue, not by making enemy lists. Everyone is made in the image of God, no matter how far each of us stray from the Good. I do ask people to pray for the souls of all those who only see people in terms of enemies/allies, and especially for those who are the victims of those who practice such Othering.

When I was 19 I found out a Zionist had made a list of every American he could find who had criticized Israel. There were tens of thousands of people on the list w/ reasons given for why they deserved to be labeled an enemy target. I was shocked to find my dad on the list because he had signed an anti-war petition. It is laughable to suggest my father is an anti-semite, but he is strongly anti-war. I, being 19 & extraordinarily naive, contacted the maker of the list to explain this was about war, not anti-semitism, and asked him to take down such a dangerous "enemies" list. He responded cheerfully that I was obviously also an "enemy of Israel" because I was opposed to making "enemy lists" and so he added my name to it and wished death upon me. The next 20 years taught me that wasn't a fringe character - that is contemporary media & political policy. The deliberate mixing of criticism of Israel with antisemitism is the actual revolting bad-faith practice and has no place in a polite, free, or (dare we hope one day) loving society.

This piece is paywalled, and I would never ever give the Atlantic a dime, but the essay begins its claim that Canadian Jews are being "purged from public life" with the story of a Jewish professor of medicine who quit teaching because he was offended by students' and colleagues statements about Israel. That's not being "purged from public life." That's deciding you can't tolerate criticism of a foreign country to which you have an irrational attachment. By the way, as a half Palestinian, I can assure you I've had to hear MUCH worse about Palestinians and Muslims at workplaces and at school, and it never occurred to me to quit and cry victim.

I asked @joekent16jan19 why he used to support strong US-Israel ties and has now become a major critic. Part of the reason, he said, is that after joining the White House team he saw firsthand the influence of Israeli officials on US foreign policy. @amconmag

I would say “I wish book twitter would talk about someone, anyone, other than Cormac McCarthy and DFW” but do I really want book twitter talking about writers I love? it would be like dragging precious jewels through pig shit. so yeah keep on talking about those two guys.

@BarneysRubble0 @JoyceCarolOates your essay starts by claiming the modern publishing industry would have forced Nabokov to cut Lolita to 50,000 words and then claims David Foster Wallace's 500,000+ word novel was the culmination of this industry's logic. A bit contradictory, no?

Initial autopsy of Renee Good indicates that it was the third shot--the one that went through the left side window--fired by ICE agent Ross that killed Good. This is why MAGA media went into overdrive trying to paint Good as some psychotic terrorist. The Trump administration knows that this was a bad shoot, but cannot concede that.
Ryan Goodman@rgoodlaw

Add: I am going to avoid the gory details in these texts. NYT also reporting here: "Two of the gunshot wounds were not immediately life-threatening, the autopsy found." It appears to be bullet that appeared to go through the left-side window that was. nytimes.com/2026/01/21/us/…

Announcing: INVERSION, Gay Life After the Homosexual Out 12 November. Pre-order now: verdur.in/inversion/ With Blake Smith, @RogerLancaster, David Moulton @ComradeDoom1, @stephengadubato, @amir_naaman, Ran Heilbrunn, Pierre d’Alancaisez, Travis Jeppesen, Oliver Davis, Yotam Feldman @jott2, Marcas Lancaster. While it was until recently deviant to promote gay lifestyles, it is now ‘problematic’ to suggest that not all departures from the norm are in the homosexual’s best interest. In the world of coercive affirmation, a new wave of discontent rises among the once-keenest proponents of sexual progress: gay men. Bold and daring, the essays in Inversion reflect on the vicious cycle of debasement, acceptance, sacrifice, and liberation that homosexuality has been stuck in for longer than it wishes to acknowledge.
