Everyone is talking about Trump saying he will "wind down" the war. But it seems like its just an acknowledgement that opening the Straits is not possible. He still has terms that Iran will not accept:
1) He has demanded that other nations who use the strait, not, the U.S., must "guard and police it" to ensure the free flow of oil.
2) He insists on the complete destruction of Iran's ballistic missile capabilities and a verifiable end to its nuclear program.
3) He has set a goal of annihilating the Iranian Navy to remove their ability to threaten regional shipping.
4) He demands that Iran stop sponsoring terrorism globally as a condition for ending hostilities
None of that will happen. Also, Iran clearly is determined to make sure the US and Israel pay a significant price for this war, so they do not start another. I think this announcement is meaningless and Trump will continue to prepare for an invasion if only to try and (unsuccessfully) pressure Iran into making concessions.
