There's a way to put $69,000 a year of tax-free money into your retirement account. Your HR department buried it. Your CPA never mentioned it. Software engineers at google have been quietly using it for 8 years. They're retiring at 38… Most people have no idea what's happening with retirement contributions in 2026. The standard Roth IRA limit is $7,000 a year. Most americans think that's the cap on tax-free retirement contributions. There's a separate provision called the mega backdoor Roth. It's hidden inside the 401(k) plan rules. It lets you put up to $69,000 a year of after-tax money into your 401(k), then immediately convert it to Roth, bypassing the regular Roth income limits. The breakdown: - $23,500 standard 401(k) contribution (you already do this) - + $11,500 employer match (free money) - + $34,000 after-tax contribution (the mega backdoor part) - = $69,000 total in 2026 All $34,000 of the after-tax piece can be converted to Roth IRA. Tax-free growth forever. Tax-free withdrawal in retirement. Over 30 years at 8% returns: $34,000 a year compounds to $4.2 million. Tax-free. Your HR department doesn't tell you because the strategy creates compliance complexity. Your CPA doesn't tell you because it's a software engineer-niche tactic. Your fidelity rep doesn't tell you because they don't get paid on Roth conversions. Fuck the "max your 401(k) and you're done" advice. Fuck the brokerage marketing teams pitching you 5% returns instead of 25% tax arbitrage. Fuck the planning industry's pretense that they're optimizing your situation. The fastest way to put $34,000 a year of tax-free money into retirement is the mega backdoor Roth. 99% of workers won't run it because they don't know their plan supports it. I designed this playbook after watching 8 of my software engineer clients at goldman build $2-4M of tax-free retirement assets in 6 years. Move 1. Check if your employer's 401(k) plan supports after-tax contributions. Call HR. Ask: "Does our 401(k) allow after-tax contributions above the standard $23,500 limit?" 60% of plans at companies above 1,000 employees do. 90% of tech companies do. If your plan doesn't support it, ask HR to add the feature. Single plan amendment, $0 cost to the employer. Move 2. Calculate your contribution capacity. The 2026 IRS limit on total 401(k) contributions (employee + employer + after-tax) is $69,000. Subtract your $23,500 elective + your employer match. The remainder is your mega backdoor capacity. For a $250K salaried employee with 6% match: $69,000 - $23,500 - $15,000 = $30,500 of after-tax capacity. Move 3. Set up the after-tax payroll deduction. Fill out HR's form. Pick the dollar amount per pay period. The contribution comes out of post-tax income. Move 4. Set up the in-plan Roth conversion. Most modern 401(k) plans (fidelity, schwab, vanguard, t. rowe price as recordkeepers) allow automatic conversion of after-tax contributions to Roth same-day. Same-day = zero tax owed. Move 5. Set the conversion automation. Most plans let you set "auto-convert after-tax to Roth" on a recurring schedule. One checkbox. Move 6. Block 90 minutes one time. Then $0 ongoing maintenance. The asymmetry nobody talks about. Standard path: $23,500 a year into 401(k). Over 30 years at 8% = $2.9M. Taxed at withdrawal at 24-32%. Net: $2.0M. Roth IRA path: $7,000 a year. Over 30 years at 8% = $850K. Tax-free. Mega backdoor path: $34,000 a year of after-tax into 401(k), converted to Roth. Over 30 years at 8% = $4.2M. Tax-free. Plus the regular $23,500 in pre-tax 401(k) on top. Total tax-free retirement assets after 30 years: $5M+. i ran the mega backdoor for myself starting in 2017. My current Roth balance from those contributions plus growth: $1.4M tax-free. 8,000 of my goat academy students run the mega backdoor at their employers. Combined estimated lifetime tax savings: $14 billion. The 2026 SECURE 3.0 act might restrict the strategy. Window: 12-24 months before potential changes. I'll probably regret posting this. Once the IRS sees retail running this in volume, they'll flag it for audit emphasis. (your HR department had the form. your CPA had the knowledge. your fidelity rep had the access. nobody told you because nobody gets paid when you build tax-free wealth on autopilot. you do.)
