A stat that is rarely tracked but very relevant. Over the past five years @CSUWrestling has had only one undergrad enter the portal and transfer. When you create a family-like atmosphere, treat everyone fair, are more than a coach while providing a great experience, kids stay!

With no notice or explanation, @CLE_State administrators are axing our championship wrestling program. Our school has also tried to silence wrestlers and coaches. But our community deserves to hear from them why CSU wrestling is standing tall and ought to be restored. 🧵

I’m honored to lead and represent this incredible program and its proud alumni. We’re more than a team—we’re family, and we’re built to fight.

Last night, driving into a changed Cleveland campus, I entered Woodling Gym—still exactly as it was when I competed for CSU—for what could be the final home dual against Kent State. The gym buzzed with nostalgia, amplified by being there with my fiancé @Knakamura88, family, and some of my Mount Union wrestlers as we shared CSU’s 21-15 victory. Sitting next to @DBekeny Bekeny, class of ’73, recalled the wrestling program, campus and gym’s early days, and after the dual meet, connecting with Coach Jack Effner and my former teammates drove home the program’s lasting impact—its discipline and bonds shaping me from wrestler to coach. A packed house proved CSU Wrestling’s heart still beats strong, fueling hope to revive its future. To Coach @JoshMoore133, thank you for orchestrating such an incredible home event, and to all working to protect the program—I’m standing with you—your legacy will endure. @CSUWrestling @CLE_State

The final home match for Cleveland State is Thursday. Obviously I hope the decision changes…but with the current circumstances I really hope everyone in the wrestling community in the area comes to support. We need to pack the stands.

I’m sick to my stomach and heartbroken for these young men and coaches. One of the oldest sports at Cleveland State University—wrestling—is being cut. As a former wrestler at CSU, this program was a huge chapter of my life and shaped me into the person I am today. I’ll always cherish what it gave me. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this decision. I hope there’s still time to make a difference and save this incredible program. Let’s save the program! 🤼‍♂️

As I process the recent news shared by Cleveland State, I find myself reflecting on what wrestling and college athletics have meant to me. Wrestling has shaped me into the man I am today, instilling traits such as humility, integrity, resilience, and perseverance. There is no substitute for the experience of chasing your dreams on the mat. Wrestling is a sport with a devoted, almost cult-like following, where glory is found not in widespread fame but in the recognition of dedicated fans—those who have lived it themselves or are connected to someone who has. It’s a sport that demands so much from its competitors, offering lessons that extend far beyond the mat. Unfortunately, the recent decision by the Cleveland State Board of Trustees demonstrates a misunderstanding of this value. Despite claiming to be stewards of a “transformational student-athlete experience,” Cleveland State has decided to cut a program that has consistently embodied academic and athletic excellence. Over the past four years, the wrestling program has achieved four consecutive top-three finishes in team GPA rankings (3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd) and produced an impressive 20 Scholar All-Americans. The dedication and commitment shown by the student-athletes, both on the mat and in the classroom, have been unparalleled. This decision disregards their hard work and the legacy they have built. My heart goes out to the underclassmen who chose to undertake the rigorous trials of college wrestling, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. Now, they face the uncertainty of the transfer portal as they search for opportunities to continue their education and athletic careers elsewhere. This decision is part of a troubling trend, following the cancellation of programs at Fresno State and Old Dominion, as well as the attempted cancellation of Stanford Wrestling. How can a sport so pure in its essence—one that teaches discipline, perseverance, and the value of hard work—be eroded by the misguided decisions of university administrations? Wrestling deserves better, and so do the athletes and coaches who pour their hearts into it. @TheCollegeWrR @CSUWrestling @nwcawrestling @NCAAWrestling @theopenmat @MatScouts1 @MrPatMineo @clevelanddotcom @CSU_Athletics @CLE_State @DrewBlogz @zzsmiller

There has been no greater honor than to sit in the corner and watch one of my best friends compete at such a high level. Love this kid. He gave everything possible to the sport, his school, and most importantly our friendship.
