Dems are in crisis mode, and half of the registered dems in CA I’ve been talking to detest the democrat party of today. I’m thinking OC will break 71.1-28.9 AGAINST Prop 50 And I think a surprise is brewing in L.A. County will go 53.78-46.22 AGAINST Prop 50
Vance Ulrich@VanceUlrich

Turnout in Orange County, CA right now: 🟦Democratic - 131,298 (40.8%) 🟥Republican - 115,572 (35.9%) ⬛️ Other - 74,803 (23.3%) This electorate is 3% more Dem than 2024. All around, this is all just bad for the GOP to stop Prop 50. High turnout and Democrats voting.

Read the comments. Two things are clear: —if the GOP does not explicitly distance itself from xenophobia, racism, antisemitism & anti-Hindu hate, next November will look like this November. —the radical left insistence on Hinduphobia denialism is a cruel, ignorant joke.
Suhag A. Shukla@SuhagAShukla

So instead of reaching out to legal immigrants, learning their needs and aspirations and creating a big tent, you will just send us back? Yeah, if guys like this are their voice and future, the Republican Party is dead in the water.

@PamBondiGOTTAgo @matthewstoller Wut?! This is 1000x worse. You're comparing the President directly picking the buyer in an $80 billion deal to the FCC expediting reviews in a $400 million one.... It's like comparing the Lufthansa heist to an overdue library book.

SCOOP: A Trump official tells @nypost that the administration favors Paramount Skydance to buy Warner Bros. Discovery – and a number of rival bidders are likely to face stiff hurdles from US regulators in the blockbuster auction. “Who owns Warner Bros. Discovery is very important to the administration,” a senior Trump administration official told On The Money. “The Warner board needs to think very seriously not just on the price competition but which player in the suitor pool has been successful getting a deal done. And that points to the Ellisons.” nypost.com/2025/10/23/med…

@byHeatherLong @andrewvandam Another factor to consider: the demand side. Historic urban areas are scarce and can't be built anymore en masse, unlike sprawl. Many were torn down. But less in areas with restrictive zoning. Many ppl want to live in historic areas. They also tend to be more vibrant.

@byHeatherLong @andrewvandam SF is 6x denser than Phoenix Seattle is 7x denser than Charleston LA is 4x denser than Atlanta It's logical that high density (ie more intensive existing development) drives desire/need for more restrictive zoning. And maybe high density + more demand drives higher price gains.

What a chart from @andrewvandam This shows home price gains -- adjusted for inflation -- since 1940 in different cities. Some cities have barely seen any gains. Others have skyrocketed. In some cases (e.g. Detroit) it's a story of the rise and fall of a certain industry. But mostly, it's a story of zoning and whether it's easy to build there. Los Angeles +567% San Francisco +555% Boston +460% Seattle +403% NYC +326% Salt Lake City +253% Miami +251% Phoenix +215% Washington DC +192% Baltimore +137% Minneapolis +118% Dallas +101% Las Vegas +82% Houston +78% Atlanta +78% New Orleans +47% Memphis +22% Pittsburgh +22% Detroit +7% Cleveland +4%

A secondary objective of the Ds in the shutdown -and acknowledged by them but not promoted due to wonkiness - is to rein in the impoundments and rescissions - ie Trump not spending budgeted money - which has been a huge underreported issue for the country.
Nate Silver@NateSilver538

The bigger thing, though, is that I'm not sure what Democrats' strategic objectives really are, beyond saving Schumer's job/boosting base morale. Tactially, it seems to be going pretty good! But tactics are not strategy.

@ppavnr I think it's mostly true that 1) Democrats primarily *want* a fight against Trump, so the lawmakers have to do it. 2) Democrats want an extension of the ACA subsidies for substantive and political reasons alike. 3) The public isn't blaming them, so they have no reason to cave.

@NateSilver538 Even if it's a political draw, there's the secondary benefit that the shutdown majorly elevates healthcare cuts as a political issue that everyone is talking about.

Best case for Schumer in particular? Republicans cave a little bit on health care, which actually helps them at the midterms. Shutdown ends relatively quickly, but there's a lot of cheerleading from partisan boomer resistance "thought leader" types about how Dems FIGHT and WIN.
Liam P. Donovan@LPDonovan

Thought experiment--what is the best imaginable scenario for Schumer here? Put on the rosiest glasses. How does he end up in better standing than when he started?
