You make it sound like parties decide the actual MEPs in a backroom deal after the votes are cast. That's not how it works. Parties publish their official candidate lists before the election. The party lists are open or semi-open. Voters can cast preferential votes for one or more individual candidates on the list. Seats are then allocated proportionally, and the MEPs are the people who were already on those lists. So, it's possible to vote directly for persons, not just the party as a whole.

I still can’t believe we all just went along with this. Looking back now, it feels crazy how quickly everyone bought into the fear, lockdowns, masks everywhere, school closures, endless rules that kept changing. We were told two weeks to flatten the curve, and it turned into years of this crap. I’m so glad I woke up to it sooner than most and started thinking for myself instead of just following the crowd. 🐑
