Iraq and Pakistan have both reached separate agreements with Iran to facilitate the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas through the Gulf, Reuters reported, citing five sources familiar with the matter. Reuters claimed that in an unreported arrangement between Baghdad and Tehran, Iraq secured safe passage for two very large crude carriers transporting around 2 million barrels of oil each through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. An Iraqi oil ministry official familiar with the agreement and the talks told Reuters that Baghdad is now seeking Iran’s approval for additional transits, as the government moves to protect oil revenues that account for nearly 95% of the country’s budget. “Iraq is a close ally of Iran, and any deterioration in Iraq's economy would also damage Iran's economic interests in the country,” the official said.
