Disadvantaged children are being priced out of early years education. Families who are not eligible for childcare entitlements - because they are not in work, do not earn enough or do not meet other criteria – pay an average of £189 per week for a part-time nursery place for a child under two. For families eligible for the funded childcare entitlement (now 30 hours), a part-time place may now be free during term-time. The cost of a full-time place for children under three is down by 39% on last year. But costs have risen in England for parents not eligible for the funded entitlement. Scotland and Wales see price rises for part-time places in 2026 of 5% and 8% respectively. Childcare Survey 2026: coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/child…

The cost of a part-time (25 hour) childcare place for a child under two in spring 2024 was nearly triple what it was in 2001. The cost grew by over £100 a week between 2001 and 2024 (from £55 a week to £160 a week), before falling for working parents in 2025 but continuing to increase for those who are not eligible for funded entitlements: coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/child… #ChildcareSurvey2026

Our annual Childcare Survey 2026 is published today, 25 years after the first survey in 2001. Childcare costs have increased at a higher rate than inflation over the last 25 years, until expansion of funded entitlements in 2024-25 brought the cost of a part-time childcare place for eligible working parents back to what it was in 2005: coramfamilyandchildcare.org.uk/research/child… #ChildcareSurvey2026

We are disappointed with news from @ukhomeoffice that from today children and families granted refugee status will be given only a short-term visa. This goes against all we know about how children recover, integrate and build a new life in a new country. bit.ly/4l9rBNC

Today we’re welcoming families to their Books Together reading session in Treehouse Children’s Centre, Lambeth. Many local authorities in London are already seeing the benefits of this innovative programme. Some parents in Lambeth talk about the benefits of Books Together in our new video.
