The piece nails the actual failure here. Not the Democratic establishment, not Israel, not oligarchs. Three self-styled recruiters found a guy living off government benefits, told him he was "the one," and built a Senate campaign on a video about oysters. People close to him were reportedly warning that pushing him into a national race, while he was still working through PTSD from two combat tours, risked wrecking the actual life he'd built. That warning lost to three men who needed a working class avatar for their theory of politics. That's not a party establishment problem. That's operatives treating a human being's mental health as an acceptable cost of doing business, and then disappearing into "the uniparty" talking points the second the bill came due.

"Think about this for a minute: In the single best chance to flip a Republican Senate seat, Democrats don’t even have a candidate. This wasn’t a Neera Tanden–engineered coup. Graham Platner did it." lnk.thebulwark.com/4ydA3Bi

@dilanesper Speaking as someone who grew up in Vermont, my observation is that rural areas have a small and not very appealing dating pool. That said, for me personally the moustache alone would be disqualifying.

Has this aspect of Platner's recruitment been reported before? They couldn't find a single lobsterman who donated to Bernie, so they settled on a guy who sells oysters to his mom?

@pebonilla My daughter and her classmates did algebra and the previous 8th grade math curriculum simultaneously this year, really not ideal. I'm not sure all 8th graders are ready for algebra but this cohort were especially unprepared.

@pebonilla They also switched from not offering it at all in 8th grade--something I thought could be clearer in the article--to mandating for all on short notice. So kids didn't have a math program preparing them for it in prior years.

I follow the middle school algebra wars, so I'm surprised I didn't know about what Cambridge was doing right in my backyard: making all eighth graders take it--the direct opposite of some other districts. I applaud the spirit, but I'm not surprised it didn't go great.

The legal system, very intentionally, demands proof beyond on a reasonable doubt and puts the burden on prosecutors. When someone seeks to hold a high office, the burden is appropriately on them to show that they merit it.
@ijbailey@ijbailey

This is no doubt true for criminal prosecution. Our ugly history of mob violence is well-documented. It's just that our legal system is so terrible on this issue, it's hard to solely rely upon it to determine if a voter should be comfortable sending an accused to the U.S. Senate.

.@JerusalemDemsas probably has the most level-headed and constructive argument coming out of the Platner fiasco: That judgment matters. And when someone might become one of the 100 most important people in America, we should take very signs of poor judgment very seriously.
