Happy birthday to Saskatchewan, which was carved out of the North West Territories today in 1905! So let's learn about the province that I called home in 2006 and from 2013 to 2017! 1. The Indigenous Peoples have occupied the land of Saskatchewan for upwards of 10,000 years. There are 70 First Nations in Saskatchewan. 2. Cree is the second-largest spoken language in the province. 3. Saskatchewan adopted its flag in 1969. 4. The capital of Saskatchewan, Regina, is named for Queen Victoria. Regina is Latin for Queen. 5. While Saskatchewan has no prime ministers born in its borders, it does lay claim to John Diefenbaker. Dief the Chief lived in Saskatchewan for decades and is buried in Saskatoon. 6. Saskatchewan is the only province with artificial borders (not based on a natural formation like a river) and which is landlocked. 7. The province is the largest producer and exporter of potash in the world. 8. Saskatchewan produces 54 per cent of Canada's wheat crop. 9. The official sport of Saskatchewan is curling and Canada's first-ever women's Olympic gold medal curling team was from Saskatchewan. 10. There are two national parks in Saskatchewan, Prince Albert in the north and Grasslands in the south. 11. Saskatchewan does not change for daylight saving time. It keeps the same time all year. 12. Saskatchewan has the oldest bird sanctuary in North America, located in the south of the province near Chaplin. 13. The province's unique name comes from Kisiskatchewanisipi, which is the Cree name for the Saskatchewan River. The name means "big swift-flowing river". 14. Saskatchewan is the fifth-largest province in Canada, and eighth if the territories are included. 15. Universal health care first emerged in Saskatchewan, under the premiership of Tommy Douglas in the 1940s and 1950s. 16. Per capita, Saskatchewan has produced more NHL players than any other province in Canada, at a rate of 2.15 players per 100,000 people. Players include icons like Gordie Howe and Bryan Trottier. 17. There are over 100,000 lakes in Saskatchewan, with freshwater making up 10% of the province's area. 18. Little Lake Manitou is called the Dead Sea of Canada, with a salt content five times higher than the oceans. 19. Saskatchewan gets more sunlight than any other province in Canada. 20. The province has over 100 kilometres of sand dunes in its borders, primarily along the south shore of Lake Athabasca. I was a late reader, but once I started, I became obsessively bookish, and I never stopped. So when I saw the data suggesting fewer kids are reading for fun, I tried to find out what parents can do to change that: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…

New Year’s Resolution? Everyone knows you don’t start eating healthy on a Sunday, you start on a Monday. But this Monday is a holiday, so you might as well wait a week. However, Valentines Day is coming, and then Easter, so you might want to wait until after then. You’re welcome.

Teacher Friends: gratitude is one of the fastest ways to improve our mood. Think of 10 insignificant things right now that you couldn’t live without. Then choose one big thing and write why it helps your life. This week invite more gratitude into your classroom, school and world.

I coach my 7 and 4 yr olds. Over and over we walk by a picture of a 9 year old kid named Jack Works who was the first person to score a goal on our main Yellowknife rink. Last week, at 20, he won the NCAA championship. #hockey #cbc #yellowknife #dreams cbc.ca/news/canada/no…
