After the assassination of JFK, Johnson was on the search for a new secretary. He spotted Gerri working in one of the government offices and asked Jack Valenti to get her phone number. Of course when Gerri got the call from the new President to come in for an interview, she thought it was a prank but obliged…only to be pleasantly surprised. Black women were not seen in the White House in the early 1960’s and definitely not in this new role. President Johnson didn’t want to do a press conference to make the announcement, so he arranged for her to appear on the game show, What’s My Line in January, 1964. Contestants had to guess her profession on the show, and you can only imagine the response from the audience and the media. She was the first person to learn that Justice Thurgood Marshall had been nominated by President Johnson to the Supreme Court. Minutes before LBJ made the official announcement, he took his nominee down to her office and said, "Here's the next Supreme Court Justice!" She told friends that she thanked the President for making the choice of the first Black court justice. ~ Wikipedia. After suffering a stroke at age 38, Ms. Whittington died of cancer at age 61 in Washington, DC, on January 24, 1993, on the same day as Justice Thurgood Marshall.
