The meal itself was fully paid for. The prices were set, the tax was added, and the total was clear. Covering that bill already supports the restaurant, its staff, and its operations. That part of the transaction was complete. What made this moment uncomfortable wasn’t the math — it was the pressure that followed. Tipping used to be a way to say “thank you” when service stood out. Somewhere along the way, it shifted into an expectation that can feel detached from the actual experience. Everyone comes in with different circumstances, different standards, and different limits. Inventory is stocked for far lower prices than grocery stores charge. If only accounting for produce costs, profit margins are well over 70%

And if I then also have to tip because otherwise, the Service Staff get fucked over, that is also a social obligation, like shown in the original post. Also, there are no Service Fees overseas.

If you’re fine with paying more for the food you’re eating while paying a fee to sit at the table you’re eating. However, you draw the line at tipping, you see how ridiculous this sounds? The server will get paid regardless.

I do not see your point. Prices should indeed go up, I'd happily pay a bit more if it meant that restaurants would actually be able to pay their staff properly.

Second, it’s not like the price would just disappear you can just look overseas if you would like to see that. Restaurants would just increase the prices of food and charge a table fee.

They should only be required to pay for the food you serve them. If the Restaurant is running on thin margins, it's because it is being run badly, or is in a bad location.

@nakedjockman @shannan_card @MrPitbull07 The vast majority of servers get paid $2.13 an hour and in California they have to share tips with the boh, so there’s a reason they make more hourly. In reality, restaurants run on such thin margins the customers generosity must be used to pay some employees
