Copernicus. Pastel pencils and white paint pen on white sketch pad. Rubbish weather currently so created using a reference image from the Copernicus wiki page.

@SkyInspector Will follow with interest, could be quite the game changer for those of us with less than perfect seeing at our sites

@CraigT_82 Pretty confident. I'll do it several times and see what I find. In very good seeing where focus is not changing significantly then there should be no dependence of fratio

Saturn from last Thursday 17th Oct in reasonable seeing. I'm getting a big benefit going to f29 but keeping the image scale about the same as my f12.7 set-up at ~0.1"/pixel. Exploring why that is.

@SkyInspector That is a significant improvement! How confident are you it wasn’t just better conditions?

@CraigT_82 Top row is last three with Uranus C at f12.7 (image scale 0.11) and lower 3 are first three with ASI 482MC at f29 (image scale 0.095). Bottom at 88% zoom and top 100% zoom to make easier to compare

@SkyInspector @KevinAstrokev So the induced blur from seeing is the same true size on the sensor, but occupies fewer pixels and so should be less visible in the image? Sounds promising

@CraigT_82 @KevinAstrokev This is my suggested explanation. Same image scale but longer fratio means defocus disc due to focus changes is same size in um but smaller in arcsecs

@KevinAstrokev Thanks Kev. You can be assured I will get to the bottom of it. The key thing is to make the minimum number of changes and still see the change. I have a theory linked to the way different effective focal lengths deal with changing seeing and resulting changes in focus.

@SkyInspector @KevinAstrokev I have researched this in the past, thinking it was the reason long FR scopes tend to be “sharper”. However found something online that stated that although the light cone is steeper, the distance the focal plane is moved due to the seeing is also farther, so net result is same.

@SkyInspector Yes good point. Wonder if it’s something a bit more subjective? Did you find it easier to focus at F/29 with the 482? Same pixel scale though so preview screen would appear the same. Can’t think of anything else that might explain it 🤷🏻‍♂️

@CraigT_82 Using APM coma correcting Barlows. 1 for 2.7x and 2 stacked for 6.25x. Both should have large sweet spots

@SkyInspector Oh ok I had it in my head that the 2.9 micron cameras had a well depth of 15k or something like that, didn’t realise the Uranus C was 47k. Maybe not the extra well depth then!

@CraigT_82 Good suggestions of things to check out. 2.9um Uranus C has well depth 47k versus 51.5k for 5.8um ASI482mc

@SkyInspector That’s an amazing capture. A lot of people don’t like this ‘phase’ of the rings but I love being able to see the southern hemisphere, so different to the northern

Incredibly detailed image of Saturn from UK. You can even pick up Enckes division just inside tips of nearly edge-on rings

#Saturn on July 19th damianpeach.com/sat24/s2024-07… Some very good conditions yesterday morning for Saturn. Some faint spots can be seen on the planet but otherwise all is very quiet. C14 with Saturn M-SQR. LRGB. 75min total time.

@NickMotown After my wife gave birth to our first I was dispatched to the ward canteen to get food for her. Plated up a nice roast and ladled on some delicious looking gravy over the meat, to awkward looks from the staff. “That’s the soup” they say! Wife said it was delicious 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s reasonably simple - if you’re doing gravy, it should be tasty enough to eat as soup on its own, and if you’re doing stuffing, it should similarly be so delicious you could have it unaccompanied in a sandwich.

Watch Iowa’s Koen Entringer (the gunner to the right side) on this play, from snap to tackle. Every youth coach should show their kids this.

Very odd. 🇺🇸 AC-130J Ghostrider 18-5886 #AE6201 made many very visible flight tracks around the time it was reported that there were airstrikes occurring in Iraq. I feel like this is unprecedented: I've never seen an aircraft likely involved carry out a sortie. Publicly.

IMO, the only thing you need to look good in the wintertime is a big loose overcoat. Four options: 1. Wythe: Big chunky herringbone tweed woven in Donegal, Ireland. Below-the-knee length for that swishy swishy effect. Custom concha-style corozo buttons. Throat latch so you can button this up to the neck. 2. Kaptain Sunshine Traveler: IMO, the single best overcoat on the market. A-line silhouette, cheeky ticket pocket, and equestrian interior leg straps. Wear it with a chunky knit and jeans. Available at No Man Walks Alone and Namu Shop. 3. Berg & Berg: A touch slimmer than the two options above, but still has a lot of verve. The collar looks good when popped from the back. Since they're based in Stockholm, they may be easier to buy from if you're based in Europe. 4. Trunk Clothiers: A London-based shop (so, again, easier to shop if you're based in Europe). Their in-house Devonshire topcoat is a little trimmer and shorter than the others on this list, but without taking away what makes these overcoats look so good. For something more affordable, check Spier & Mackay.
