This is very, very well said by Sarah. No one holds the Socceroos to the standard of sold out stadia. It’s an aspiration, not an expectation. @TheMatildas rise has been extraordinary, record breaking. Not measured only in crowds, nor by different standards.
ABC SPORT@abcsport

“If the Matildas are constantly measured by their success of only having full stadiums, it's really dangerous because that's not a blight on men's sport … it never is, and it never has been.” 🇦🇺🏟️⚽ 📱 Hear the AFC Women's Asian Cup on ABC listen: ab.co/4bSbSza

“FIFA can’t solve geopolitical conflicts, but we are committed to using the power of football and the FIFA World Cup to build bridges and promote peace — as our thoughts are with those who are suffering as a consequence of the ongoing wars.” FIFA is fond of saying that it can’t resolve conflicts, but fails to acknowledge that it is prohibited from promoting, contributing to, or supporting them. Which it is currently doing. FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee concluded that “the final legal status of the West Bank remains an unresolved and highly complex matter,” despite the International Court of Justice ruling that Israel’s occupation of the West Bank is unlawful under international law, its settlement regime violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, and its laws and policies constitute racial segregation in breach of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination — the very prohibition FIFA’s own statutes require it to uphold. FIFA also formally partnered with Trump’s Board of Peace, the mechanism created to implement a Gaza reconstruction plan that is widely condemned as a blueprint for the forced displacement of Palestinians. Forcible transfer of a civilian population is a war crime under Articles 45 and 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, and a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute. That same partner — the Trump administration — launched military strikes on Iran in violation of the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, including children. Many of whom, no doubt, played football. I doubt FIFA’s thoughts will be much comfort. FIFA’s own statutes require it to remain free of government interference and to uphold human rights. Infantino wearing a Trump campaign hat at the Board of Peace’s inaugural meeting, while gifting its architect a FIFA Peace Prize, is not neutrality. It is institutional endorsement of conduct that international law unambiguously prohibits. FIFA says it can’t solve geopolitical conflicts. That is correct. But it is actively promoting them, contributing to them, and lending them its institutional legitimacy. That is not bridge-building. It’s blowing them up.

Epic Final for @TheMatildas against a fantastic Japanese team this Saturday night for the Asian continental title. Australia will need to be at their very best and have a very good plan. The Nadeshiko are a phenomenal team. But Australia is at home, with big stars, vast experience and the desire for this generation to win a trophy they deserve for their contribution to the game. It’s going to be another awesome night of football. Go the Matildas.

Fantastic. So important to have a crack at a home tournament final, a chance to go one better than at the 2023 World Cup. Tough game. China did well on the counter in the first half but when the game switched and China dominated possession and territory in the second, it suited the Matildas. Who countered effectively and defended well. Well done to Joe in his first major tournament. If Japan get through, as fully expected, a huge challenge and epic final looming. Tremendous 💪

Very good to have 2 stalwarts back, huge experience added to the side. Good timing for Kyra’s return. And Steph’s leadership is critical. Let’s go 💪🇦🇺

It’s 5 years since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar that has killed tens of thousands, displaced over 3.5 million people, and the persecution of the Rohingya people that continues — and worsens — today. Myanmar is currently the respondent in an International Court of Justice (ICJ) case alleging violations of the Genocide Convention in the systematic persecution and destruction of the Rohingya people. The film, ‘Voices of Resistance’ at Leichhardt hall tonight brings together people opposed to the genocide, tells the story of some of those who fled to Australia, and the impacts that continue on millions. Crimes against humanity emanate and ripple out throughout the world, in this case into all of Asia, into Bangladesh with the world’s largest refugee camp, and on future generations. Which is why Australia should always stand against genocide and other crimes against humanity. Wherever it is.
