My son asked me out to lunch when he was 21 year old. He had never asked me out to lunch before that. I instantly thought - what does he need to tell me? My mind wondered to a pregnancy (he wasn’t married at the time but had a steady girlfriend) - could that be it? I told myself that I would be supportive regardless of what he told me. That day over lunch he informed me that he was joining the Marines and had already signed the papers. I cried. Not from joy but from worry. I begged him to at least finish college and go in as an Officer but he was resolute, he wanted to be enlisted. This was in 2009 and Afghanistan was waiting. He served two terms there and saw some terrible things and also lost several friends from his platoon. Today he serves in the National Guard and was very recently deployed to the Middle East for a year’s deployment. I thought it would be a peaceful deployment but that of course has changed. For those that ask about National Guard deploying overseas, it has been happening for decades. I’m writing this as a mother. A worried mother. It doesn’t matter that he is now 36 years old - the worry never ends. To all of you parents, spouses, siblings and friends with loved ones deployed - know that if you ever need someone to listen to you, to hear your fears, I am here. You are welcome to DM me any time. Prayers to all US military deployed in the Middle East and even more prayers for those they have waiting for them when they return. 🫡🇺🇸❤️
