It’s ok to be nervous before games. It means you’re motivated, and it's this motivation that can drive you to succeed despite being nervous.

Youth sports are supposed to be about fun, building character, getting better & improving fitness. Unfortunately, in many cases, they’re also causing social anxiety/mental health problems for athletes & parents alike. Don’t be so serious & miss the big picture of what it’s about.

Players have to be taught to deal with the stresses & emotions of their sport. A college coach shouldn’t be the first person to teach them discipline, tell them they need to work harder or hold them accountable. Kids who aren’t equipped will crumble & fall when their truth hits!

The best athletes play each game like it's their last. They leave it all out on the field, then when the game is over, they recover physically and mentally so they can do it again next game.

Four healthy attitudes to have about competition: 1. Effort and improvement are more important than winning. 2. Cheating to win is never okay. 3. You can compete hard on the field, and be friendly off of it. 4. Winning/losing doesn’t change your true worth as a person.

As an athlete, your biggest problem in games isn't making mistakes. It's your negative response to making mistakes. Once you learn to stay positive and resilient, you'll perform much better in games.

When season is over, take 1-2 wks off to let your body/mind rest. Focus on spending time w/ family & friends, getting academics on point, extra sleep, eat well, work on flexibility & get with your athletic trainer & take care of any nagging injuries. More isn’t better right now!
