I did the haul out and bottom paint of my boat myself this year. Sanded the props, rudders, shafts, zincs, bottom paint etc. took about 2-3 days and then I polished the hull.
I’ve owed a 14’, 25’, and now a 50’ boat.
I cannot overstate how accurate the whole “boats cost 10% of their value yearly in upkeep”
Basically dead accurate for each boat I’ve had.

It’s really so easy to not infect and kill ppl around you. No one is saying u have to be perfect, but if you respond to disabled ppl asking you not to kill/maim them and other vulnerable folks by having a meltdown instead of showing basic solidarity, you are not a serious person

@CridgeJason @WagieCapital Um yes? I chose to invest in stocks instead of paying down my mortgage. Now my stocks are worth 6x the value of my home. The mortgage still has 20 years left (I refinanced it twice to pull money out).

@WagieCapital Damn! On a totally unrelated note, here's BCE. It's a Canadian telecom. Stock price way down because the dividend was too high, they cut it in half, and it now pays 5% at 65% payout ratio. Basically free money if you borrow at 4.7

Went to my second ever broadway show the other week and it was a one-man performance by Daniel Radcliffe aka Harry Potter. He spends the 20 minutes before every show handing out props and recruiting people to interact with him during the show. Never seen someone so dialled in. Was an amazing performance, 1.5 hours straight, no intermission. He does this night after night. Did some math with Claude and he probably makes $50K per week which is great $$ but still considerably less than what he would make for a movie role. His parents also helped him invest his Harry Potter earnings well and he makes $660K/month just off investments (UK companies are required to make full financial disclosures, very different from the US but very useful for this kind of pocket watching). Which means he never has to work again he just continues to do this for the love of the game. These kinds of in-person experiences and acts of passion are one of the few things that can’t be replaced by AI Oh also he does not like it when you call him Harry or bring up his old movies. Ask me how I know.

What just happened? At 2:30 PM ET today, CBS News reported that President Trump was considering "boots on the ground" in Iran. Then, at 3:43 PM ET, President Trump said "I don't want to do a ceasefire with Iran," with the S&P 500 hitting a new 2026 low. Exactly 90 minutes later, at 5:13 PM ET, President Trump said the US is "considering winding down" the war with Iran. Between the 3:43 PM ET and 5:13 PM ET comments, the S&P 500 had already risen nearly +1% on NO news. By 6:15 PM ET, the S&P 500 rallied +1.8% from its low, adding +$900 BILLION in market cap. Markets are now closed until Monday.

My worldview was shaped a lot by the conversations I had with elderly people as their pharmacist.
Some things I learned:
-those who didn’t have kids lived miserable lives past 65
-being social in your old age is key
-after owning your own home and having reasonable retirement savings to manage your own care, money has little utility if you’re sick
-it’s all about mindset, the miserable people were miserable when they were healthy, and they were miserable when they were sick, the reverse was also true
-lots of the elderly had regrets about not optimizing time with their kids
-being a present primary caregiver for someone who is dying is one of the highest callings you can respond to
-live in your own home as long as you can
-picking a good spouse is one of the most important decisions you can make
-if you’re a man and your spouse dies, you’re likely to live a miserable life
-if you’re a woman and your spouse dies you are unlikely to live a miserable life
-if you don’t use it, you lose it (walk and stay active)
-all old people are ready to die at the end, so having anxiety over your eventual death isn’t necessary
The one statement an old lady made once stuck with me above it all
“Every morning I wake up, and walk to the bathroom and look in the mirror. I see this old woman staring back and me and say who is this old lady, I live my life through my eyes and I FEEL (psychologically) like I’m still in my 20s, but life happened so fast”
What did all of this teach me?
-life is incredibly short
-life is incredibly fragile (your end could be today)
-YOU wake up every day and can just choose to be happy
-make money, not too much, buy time, not too much, and spend your money and time with your kids and family
