Our thoughts and condolences again go out to her family and all those in our community who have been touched by this loss.

hooks also taught us how to love through her many writings on the subject. The Critical Minded team hopes that in the great void and space that hooks’ transition leaves that it will be now filled with love as she would have hoped.

For many of us bell hooks has been and remains the guidepost on our journey to unearthing the ways cultural criticism can help us be our better selves by creating a just and equitable world that unapologetically centers the experiences of black women.

In the coming weeks and months we know that the power and breadth of Greg Tate’s cultural contributions will continue to reverberate. But in this moment we wanted to celebrate how much he has meant to this community.

“What made Tate’s criticism special was his ability to theorize outward from his encounters with genius and his brushes with banality—to telescope between moments of artistic inspiration and the giant structures within which those moments were produced."

As a friend and mentor to many in the Critical Minded community, it goes without saying that our condolences and love are with Greg Tate’s family and all whose lives he influenced or touched.
