@OurSf49ers I can’t wait to see my team the 49ers beat the Rams in Melbourne. I watched every Niners game this season and stoked to see them coming to Oz.

@sovernTranch We have a mulberry tree on our homestead but extremely high in oxalates - so be careful in amount consumed. As near carnivore, a small amount of blueberries is the only fruit I consume now (raspberries high on oxalates too)

@OldHollowTree Honeycomb is great product in that it demands a much higher price compared to honey (here in Australia at least), and doesn’t require processing like honey.

We offered raw honey comb as one of our top tier rewards for donors. Truth be told, it was kind of a test run to see if we’d want to sell it. This is what you can look forward to next year…

@EmanBotl You do need to check your ferretin levels as high ferretin is very very bad for your liver etc. I was 500 and started giving blood and it actually dropped too low to 20 last year. I’m carnivore and it’s now 100. You do need to test.

@EmanBotl I made scrambled eggs with my wife’s home grown and made salami this morning. Salami/pepperoni really goes amazing with carnivore eggs.

What should I add to these 10 scrambled eggs? Cooked with 3 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup heavy cream.

@ItsJustinRhodes We just freeze ours and, as mostly carnivore, I mix frozen blueberries with my wife’s raw sheep milk cream for instant blueberry ice cream as the berries freeze the cream. Can add some maple syrup too.

@Michell9704767 We have older tallow that had beef smell but my wife said the latest batch was made from suet fat, from around kidneys, which makes the best tallow and much less odour. Plus when we’re rendering we make sure to pull out any bits of meat that get in, which are the brown bits.

@Spin1990 I believe it. Every time I would accidentally spill some, I'd just rub it into my hands. My hands are nice and soft now. Smells life beef even after doing dishes, though. I may deodorize some to make some sort of moisturizer.

I finally got my tallow rendered and put into jars. From our own cattle. Can't beat raising something yourself. Next best would be to buy local.

@KingVelesI 100%. My Austrian wife, who lives in Australia, is a leading dairy sheep breeder and raw cheese maker. I grow our beef and enjoyed having dairy cows, but raw sheep milk is superior in every way - even sheep milk butter, once you get used to the non-yellow colour.

Whenever I post about sheep, I'm reminded of how many people aren't even aware of the fact that DAIRY SHEEP EXIST. I find this very surprising, as many of the world's most famous and prized cheeses are made from sheep milk. For some reason, goats became the dairy animal of choice for most small-scale homesteaders, but why? On average, sheep milk just tastes better to the human palate, and sheep are much easier to raise for beginners — they're more respectful of fences, more resistant to parasites, and MUCH more resistant to cold and humid weather. Many people will say that goats produce more milk than sheep, but that is a deceptive statement — yes, goats, on average, produce a greater VOLUME of milk, but this is due to their milk containing a larger quantity of water compared to sheep milk, which is denser, creamier, and sweeter. Both species produce about the same amount of dairy dry matter, when you control for breed purpose (dairy sheep vs. dairy goats, or meat sheep vs. meat goats). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: For most small-scale homesteaders who want to produce their own dairy, a small herd of sheep of a local heritage breed, with good dairy capacity, and an udder conformation suited to hand milking, is the best option.

@barnabasdotexe Unfortunately Mulberry is super high in oxalates. I ate a tonne off our tree, along with raspberries and had to get a lump cut off my face last year. The chickens do feast on them now. I did love them but not good for human consumption.

In my opinion the best low-effort, high-flavor fruit tree is the mulberry. No sprays necessary of any kind. They grow everywhere. Harvest is easy. Pick directly from the tree or shake it and collect from the ground.

@RedVelesov Congratulations. I love your passion for homestead life. You would probably know to segregate the two flocks for a couple of weeks to be sure new birds aren’t bringing any unknown virus or similar in. We learnt this the hard way.

We've chosen our chicken breed! A flock of eleven Hrvatica chickens (ten young hens and a rooster) will arrive at our farm soon. Much like the Tsigai sheep and the Slavonian-Syrmian Podolian cattle we raise, Hrvatica chickens are a protected Croatian heritage breed. The Hrvatica (meaning 'Croat' in the female form of the word) is a smaller chicken, with roosters weighing only about 2.5 kg, and hens weighing under 2 kg. It's a hardy, low-input breed that goes broody multiple times a year and has excellent mothering instincts. They're known for having a "wilder" temperament; they're great foragers, and love to sleep in trees. While Hrvatica chickens are dual-purpose, they excel as layers, typically laying from 200 to 250 eggs a year. The eggs are smaller in size, averaging between 50 and 55 g. The main challenge with raising Hrvatica chickens is that they're able flyers - if they'll be as interested in our garden as our peafowl were, we'll have to make our dead hedge fences much taller. We're very happy that, by focusing on Hrvatica chickens, we'll help preserve and improve another endangered Croatian heritage breed.

@RedVelesov Our flock in Australia got hit by a virus last year that stopped them laying. I can’t remember the name but it was probably spread by native birds visiting the homestead, which isn’t much you can do about it. But you will know if some of the birds start dying, hopefully you’re ok

What to do when your hens stop laying? We keep Australorps, and, so far, they've been good layers that kept us supplied with fresh eggs even during winter. However, something's off now, as our usually reliable hens are on strike. What could be the culprit? - They show no signs of moulting. - They always have access to fresh water. - They're free-ranged 24/7. (No point in closing the henhouse, as the dog guards it during the night.) - They're getting A LOT of protein, as we're in the middle of a stink bug plague. (I offered them a huge, chopped up rat today - no interest.) - They eat all the corn they want. - Most of them are of prime laying age. Any advice on how to get them to lay again? How do you keep your laying hens in top shape?

@JakeWolki For me, if this is organic grass-fed, then the fat is the healthiest part of a completely healthy piece of meat - plus the obvious, and true, statement that fat is flavour. To be devoured.
