After delays and budget overruns, this was a likely outcome: IGO/Tianqi Lithium decide to stop works on its Kwinana LiOH Plant 2. Makes a lot of sense considering that Plant 1 is still not where it was meant to be. With Albemarle having made the same decision for its LiOH Kemerton plant, it is clear that i) refining minerals is mucho more challenging than thought ii) the know is in China and capex is significantly lower there (x3?) and, iii) demand for LiOH outside of China is not willing to pay a premium for a China free supply chain. We will now have to watch whether SQM/Wesfarmers' refinery can change the Australian track record. BTW would love to understand how Posco's ramp up is going ....
