Hi there, Deborah. 👋 Do you like facts? I hope so, because I do and a whole lot are coming your way right now. 🫵 Time for an education. 🫴📚 Believe it or not, floods are not new. Indeed, they have occurred for at least all of human history and probably before that. Floods occurred long before your daddy got the hots for mommy one night. History didn't begin the year you were born. It turns out, Spain has a long history of severe flooding dating back to the Middle Ages. 🇪🇸 This is especially true in València, which lies flat on an alluvial plain along the Túria riverbed, which makes it a particularly susceptible river to flooding. 🌊 In fact, between 1321 and 1949 AD, there were at least 34 catastrophic floods in Valencia, 19 of which were “extraordinary” (e.g., Barriendos & Rodrigo, 2006). On page 12 (pdf), you'll see that in Figure 7, there has been no detectable increase in flooding in Valencia since the 14th century. There was an unusually high number of floods between the 1570s and 1680s. How did that happen with pre-industrial levels of CO₂? Whoops, greenhouse gas emissions don't 'splain that now, do they? Here's the peer-reviewed journal article on that, give the link a little click-sy. Happy reading, 🫳 🔗tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.162… Then, of course, there was the October 14, 1957 flood, when 50 centimeters (almost 20 inches) of rain fell on the Valencia metropolitan area over the course of 48 hours. Water came gushing down the Túria River and inundated the city, claiming at least 81 lives in its path. This article provides a nice summary of that event. I'll drop a link to that, too, 🫳 🔗carolineangus.com/2013/10/14/la-… For a little comparison between 1957 and 2024, let's refresh ourselves with the stats: 🌧️ October 13-14, 1957: 50.0 cm (19.7 in.) 🌧️ October 29, 2024: 34.3 cm (13.5 in.) Whoops. 🥴 The rainfall was greater 67 years and 108 ppm LOWER atmospheric CO₂ levels ago. Whheird. That doesn't sound like climate-fueled rainfall to me. Back to the drawing board. ✍️ Now, following the 1957 flood, city planners rerouted the river south of Valencia. 🔗#v=onepage&q=plan%20sur%20riada%20valencia&f=false" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">books.google.com/books?id=j34If…
While this fix was successful, instead of adopting and enforcing stricter zoning codes, elected officials and urban planners sat back while developers constructed more buildings around the new flood channel, placing more people in harm's way. The flooding we observed last Tuesday wasn't caused by the climate crisis. Rather, it was poor city planning. I hope you found this lesson informative. 😌
I woke up seeing 60+ people are dead, thinking Valencia will be a turning point, will dominate the news, wake everybody up to climate change. It’s not though is it. The budget is dominating reporting in the UK. Public don’t care. We are determined to send our children over a cliff to their deaths without even engaging with this issue.
