Not a typical week for me, so tweeting a bit all over the place so far. Had a monster day with sheep yesterday and I’m now getting the ferry and heading to the mainland! I’m attending the Oxford Farming (and Crofting) conference this week.

Crofting legislation is fairly complicated and its no different when it comes to succession! Brian Inkster, well-known crofting law specialist, takes us through different scenarios and highlights what to watch out for when it comes to passing on a croft. fas.scot/publication/cr…

Scotland's unique form of regulated land tenure is at a crossroads. One way leads to decline. The other to vibrant small scale land use across all of our country. @CroftingScot need a new CEO to help take this in the right direction. 6 days left to apply. crofting.scotland.gov.uk/job-vacancies

Aberdeen to Wick in 40 minutes by flight this evening rather than seven hours on the train. Twenty five minutes down on Wednesday night with the wind behind us. Carbon footprint is lower than the train if the plane has reasonable occupancy. Vital transport link for Caithness.

@andrew_thin @CroftingScot Focus by @CroftingScot has always been on residency rather than neglect. Presumably because easier to police from a desk in Inverness. Often those who are not resident are still cultivating but others who are resident are neglecting. Pursuing the former but not the latter fair?

Crofters have a legal duty to live within 32 km of their croft, to cultivate and maintain it, and not to misuse or neglect it. Impossible for @CroftingScot to police this given current resources. Vigilance by landlords and other crofters also vital. obantimes.co.uk/2022/12/06/bre…

@Welshracer Nope, not in the slightest! The croft may be sublet to another crofter, not including the house. The whole point of crofting is to provide security of tenure, can’t see how compulsory purchase would fit with that.

140 years ago today, 19th April 1882 is the day commemorated for the ‘Battle of the Braes’, land rights struggle, in the Isle of Skye. My great grandparents, Neil Buchanan and his wife Mary MacPherson were crofters at Peinachorran in Braes at the time.
