I don’t get to Dublin often, so it also was a delight to have dinner in The Club in Dalkey, my old local, with friends of almost 40 years. Lots of lads from Cuala there drinking ginger beer with Angostura bitters. So, you know, we had to… 🤣

You may have seen the news.. After 17 years with Newstalk, not least 14 with OTB, I have decided to move on to pastures new. I depart on great terms, with nothing but gratitude. Having pitched up at the station in 2007, fresh out of college, this place has been one of the few constants in my adult life. I’ll be part of a new podcast project with the Irish Independent, which is both very exciting & will allow more time at home, increasingly a priority. I’ll finish up with OTB on 14th August. There are many colleagues to thank in person. Primarily, this tweet is just to let listeners know directly, and to say a huge thanks to those of you who have been generous & supportive & funny from afar; it made a dream job all the more enjoyable. I’ll miss it - maybe that’s a good time to go. Thanks.

Random act of kindness of the day: my wife got out of #Galway court to find this on her car. @GalwayCityCo don’t have text/app payment so she would have indeed faced a fine if not for the kindness of Fintan - fair play agus Gaillimh abu

A gentleman and a legend. I’ve lots of fond memories of Mícheál over many years in Croker, among other places. He was an iconic broadcaster with an extraordinary talent, bringing even the dullest games to life. Some fabulous quotes here. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. RIP Mícheál.
Daniel Hussey@DanielHussey2

My favourite Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh quotes: "Seán Óg Ó hAilpín. His father's from Fermanagh. His mother's from Fiji. Neither a hurling stronghold." "The stopwatch has stopped. It’s up to God and the referee now. The referee is Pat Horan. God is God." "Teddy McCarthy to John McCarthy, no relation. John McCarthy to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation." "Anthony Lynch, the Cork corner-back, will be the last person to let you down. His people are undertakers." "1.5 to 0.8 - well, from Lapland to the Antarctic, that’s level scores in any man’s language." "I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them. The priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey. 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field, Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, and it’s a goal. So much for religion!" "Pat Fox out to the 40 and grabs the sliotar. I bought a dog from his father last week. Fox turns and sprints for goal. The dog ran a great race last Tuesday in Limerick. Fox to the 21, fires a shot, it goes to the left and wide. And the dog lost as well." "He grabs the sliothar. He's on the 50. He's on the 40. He's on the 30. He's on the ground." "Colin Corkery on the 45 lets it go with the right boot. It's over the bar. This man shouldn’t be playing football. He’s made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man, but he couldn’t kick points like Colin Corkery." "Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail. I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park." "He’s not a big man, he’s not a small man, he’s what you might call a handyman." "Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, I’ll tell you a little story. I was in Times Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a newsstand, and I said, 'I suppose ye wouldn’t have The Kerryman, would ya?' To which, the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me, and he said, 'Do you want the North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?' He had both so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet."

Do you ever start engaging in friendly banter on here and realise halfway through posting that your comment could be misconstrued or seen by someone spoiling for a fight & then just delete the whole thing because you just haven't got the energy or the bandwidth. 🙄😅

That's a wrap on my first election race. Bray West was a four seater and as expected three of those seats went to sitting councillors - the other seven of us on the card were competing for that last seat. I lost out to the better campaigns. I'm happy to have pushed all the way - last one eliminated. I'm not going to point the finger at budgets or parties - I made some very naive errors. I should have done better. I really wanted to secure that wage so I could use it to provide some much needed mental health supports to young people in our town, but sadly it wasn't to be. That's the only part I'm sad about. Sorry Eoin, and happy birthday mate. I want to say a huge, huge thanks to the 932 people who made a mark next to my name. That's unbelievable to me to be honest. I'm genuinely grateful. The support along the way has been phenomenal - you know who you are. Well done to all the candidates who stood today. Regardless of party - I've a lot of love and respect for anyone who will stand over their principles and put themselves in the firing line for what they believe in. It was a big day for nationalists - people who want the best for the people of Ireland. Win or lose, we've started something here. Particular shout out to the @independent_ire crew who were a huge help to me - great day lads, enjoy. What an experience. I enjoyed every second 🙏

I met my grandson Henry on FaceTime this morning after my daughter called me and told me to pull in (I was driving). He was only 30 minute old. My heart 💙 for her and baby Henry named after his late grandad, Sophie’s Dad. Love & legacy & life-changing day. 👌
