Shuhei Yoshida shared the story of how PlayStation dropped the ball with Demon's Souls and FromSoftware back on PS3! He said he had just returned to Japan after being stationed in the US. Demon Soul was almost complete and he got to try it at the office. He played for 2 hours but was still stuck at the very beginning because he kept on dying and having to start over again. He thought “what an incredibly difficult game” and he told the QA team “it's difficult, right?”. So, just before its release there wasn't much excitement about the game and the Famitsu review was also not very high. Its initial shipments were very low. To make matters worse, PlayStation’s international publishing branches of US, Japan and Europe were all operating independently from each other. Uncertainty about the game's quality was shared inside the company and America and Europe both decided to pass on the game and said they won't publish it. However, after the game was released in Japan people began to talk about it online on sites like 2chan and hype began to build for the game saying “this is actually super fun” and “this is a god-tier game” and its reputation started to snowball. Then Atlus in America and Bandai Namco in Europe said we will release it and picked it up and it became a hit. When it came to the next game. Sony had finally realized it was a great concept and new type of game and they approached FromSoft saying they want to be involved. But Fromsoft turned them down saying “Sony didn't support Demon Souls, did you?” Then they went with Bandai Namco and changed the name to “Dark Souls”. He said he often gets criticized by overseas users saying “ You’re the Yoshida who didn't recognize the appeal of Demon’s Souls, right?”. He said he had a preconceived notion in his head that action games needed to be designed to smoothly guide the player towards enjoyment. He failed to grasp the true intent of the game from its creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. The lesson he learnt is that he needs to talk to creators first to understand the experience and vision they are trying to create beforehand. In the end he says Miyazaki’s games, Dark Souls and Elden Ring, have become massive hits worldwide so it was probably for the best for the industry and gamers that they dropped the ball with the Demon’s Souls. Since the announcement that Sony is killing off the digital PS3 and Vita storefronts, gems like this have skyrocketed in price. I purchased a copy of this last October for $53.11 and this month it’s climbed all the way to $140-200. Fuck Sony.
