Unpopular opinions from my exhaustion unrelated to taxes: 1) A lot of accounting practices and accounting departments are toxic. Like, a LOT of them. 2) Some cities are amazing, but not all of us want to justify the HCOL. We are happy living elsewhere.

A little venting session here #TaxTwitter While working on a now former client's 2024 return... Not a simple return by any means, but the kind of stuff we deal with as part of our day to day client work. While reviewing their K-1 from their law firm something didn't look right. The 401(k) contributions weren't being broken out correctly on the State K-1. I flagged it, engaged the firm's accountant, pushed back on their position, and went directly to the State for a ruling. The State confirmed I was right. The partnership returns & K-1’s got amended. The client saved $9,000 in state taxes they never would have known they overpaid. This isn't remarkable. This is just what happens when you actually pay attention. This is what we do. Quietly, methodically, every single day. Catching things that slip through. Fighting for positions most preparers wouldn't even question. Saving real money for real people who have no idea how close they came to just paying it. Then this tax season rolled around and I reached out about their 2025 documents. One line back: "Thanks. We are going forward with the firms new accountant." No real explanation. No acknowledgment of the value provided. Just gone. And look, I get it. This profession has truly become a race to the bottom. There's always someone cheaper. There's always a software promising to do it for $99. There's always a “professional” who will just take the K-1 at face value, file the return, and move on. What there isn't always is someone who actually knows what they're looking at. The frustrating truth is that the better you are at this job the more invisible your value becomes. The client never sees the disaster you prevented. They never feel the tax bill they didn't get. They just see your invoice. The work doesn't stop mattering just because no one acknowledges it. But every once in a while, it would be nice if they did. To every accountant in the trenches right now doing the real work. You know the value you bring. Even when clients don't always see it.

@canediver This is the same client who was with the icky firm. She just told me today she’s still waiting on her refund. Somehow they managed just fine to assess her a penalty for being late. Thankfully I have a POA on file, so I can see what there is to find out next week.

@CrownCPA One ex- client filed last May and never got their refund. They didn’t mention it until a week before changing tax advisors in February, and all I found out in that week was that it was “held for review’

Who has clients who haven’t gotten refunds from filing on extension last October? Do you know why? Thought I’d ask here before lighting up the IRS 🤪 #TaxTwitter

I have a copy of an S-Corp return and it’s the goofiest shit I’ve ever seen. Included with the S-Corp is a “Worksheet C”. This worksheet is literally a Sch C for a 1040! I have no clue why this is included with the S-Corp tax return. Has anyone seen this before? This return was prepared by a local moron.

Yeah, more tax cuts so people can eat more burgers. Yum.

Dear Chat, I was finally successful on a Zoom call of getting the client to agree to switch. All I had to do was tell her how much she was paying them for NO strategy or help.

I suggested my client with the crappy firm switch tax professionals again… I’m afraid their next faux pas is going to be not asking anything about shareholder medical because they switched mid-year last year. 😅 We shall see if the switch happens this time…

@scotchua @BrianDavisTax Trump isn’t the new standard of truth, he’s the new standard for marketing. Everything is about the loudest, most catchy soundbite now. Politicians have to capture attention the same way biz does because it’s an attention economy. It’s not necessarily “right” but it just is

@CrownCPA @BrianDavisTax IMO, Trump is not the new standard of truth telling. I expect better and I think the framing is trash if a person wants to have a real discussion about the issue. If you strip away the illusion that “you get paid back for what you put in” from SS it’ll kill popular support.
