The death toll from the Tenerife storm that swept people into the ocean has risen On Sunday, a powerful wave struck a group of tourists at a coastal seawater pool. Today, authorities confirmed that the number of victims has climbed to five. Such pools are dangerous during storms: they are protected only by a low concrete wall that large waves can easily overcome. According to AP, despite warnings and barriers, people still approached the water. Those who were swept away were extremely difficult to rescue — beneath the pool are slippery volcanic rocks that offer nothing to hold on to.
