Another perspective: Miguel de Cervantes, one of the most famous authors in Western history, was himself enslaved by Muslims for 5 years. Cervantes fought along with the Holy League in the Battle of Lepanto (Oct. 7, 1571) against the Ottoman Turks but was captured and enslaved in Algiers in 1575 along with his brother Rodrigo. While his family managed the ransom for his brother within a few years, Cervantes would languish for 3 more years, unsuccessfully attempting escape 4 times. In the end a religious group in Spain, the Trinitarian Friars, raised the money for his ransom and he was finally free. He published the first installment of Don Quixote, including his somewhat autobiographical chapters about a Christian enslaved by Muslims in the Barbary, years later in 1605. It's one of the most famous works in Western literature, largely credited as being the first modern novel and was an immediate sensation upon its publication. Complete with the 3 chapter "Captive's Tale" section about the Muslim enslavement of Christians. This was all common knowledge as well as a constant threat, part of our culture and art for centuries.
