HOME SELLERS SLASH PRICES AS BUYERS GAIN POWER A record 34.2% of home sellers cut prices in February, up from 31.5% last year, according to Redfin. UAE OIL BOSS SAYS HORMUZ STILL SHUT WITH IRAN RESTRICTING ACCESS The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, with Iran restricting access and controlling transit, according to UAE oil chief Sultan Al Jaber. “Conditional passage is not passage—it’s control,” he said, calling for the strait to reopen fully and without restrictions. Since the Iran war began in late February, the blockade has halted the flow of oil and gas through the world’s most critical shipping route. Iran has introduced supervised transit lanes, citing safety concerns like sea mines. Around 230 loaded tankers are waiting to depart, while Gulf producers, including ADNOC, have been forced to cut output. Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel and remain elevated despite a tentative ceasefire.

BREAKING: Global central banks bought +19 tonnes of gold in February, posting their 23rd consecutive monthly purchase. This follows +6 tonnes in January, with year-to-date purchases now at +25 tonnes. The National Bank of Poland led with +20 tonnes, bringing gold reserves to 570 tonnes, or ~31% of total FX holdings. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan added +8 tonnes, lifting its gold reserves to 407 tonnes, or ~88% of total FX holdings. China purchased +1 tonne, marking the 16th consecutive monthly purchase, pushing the total to 2,308 tonnes, or ~10% of FX total reserves. Meanwhile, Turkey and Russia saw the biggest declines in February at -8 tonnes and -6 tonnes, with Turkey later selling an estimated ~120 tonnes in March to fund FX operations amid the Iran war. Central bank gold demand remains strong.

The US services sector is signaling stagflation: The ISM Services PMI fell -2.1 points in March, to 54.0, missing expectations of 54.9. Meanwhile, the employment index dropped -6.6 points, to 45.2, the weakest since December 2023 and deep in contraction territory. On the other hand, prices paid surged +7.7 points, to 70.7, the highest since October 2022, as the Iran war drove energy costs higher. The economy is caught between rising prices and a weakening labor market. Higher inflation is coming.

BREAKING: Iran has told mediators it will be limiting the number of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz to around 12 per day and impose tolls under the ceasefire, per WSJ. This is a sharp reversal from last night's statements from President Trump claiming a "complete opening" of the Strait of Hormuz. Today, just 4 ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, the fewest of any day in April so far. The US is still pushing publicly for a free and open strait, but Iran is "not showing a willingness to loosen its grip." Oil prices are back above $95/barrel.
