Signing Vicario over Raya might have been one the best decisions this club has made in a LONG time…

Why would Gooners be ‘devastated’ at City’s late equaliser. Most Arsenal supporters would have bitten your hand off if a draw was on offer this morning, such are the fine margins right now…

@Alarsenalnews_ I was at that game as a 12 year old. Remember telling all my mates Stephen Hughes was class for years after!

Highbury was absolutely rocking that February afternoon in 1998. North Bank bouncing, Clock End in full voice, and right in the middle of a massive London derby… young Stephen Hughes, the local lad straight out of the academy, steps up and bangs in a brace. Two absolute beauties. 2–0 against Chelsea. Game over. The sort of afternoon every Gooner still talks about when the old Double season gets mentioned. “He’s at an age when he needs to play… I don’t want to kill his career.” – Arsène Wenger That’s the gaffer himself explaining why he let Hughes move on a few years later. Because even Wenger knew the lad had quality and deserved proper minutes. Stephen came through the ranks with us, lifted the 1994 FA Youth Cup at Highbury, and was one of those homegrown kids who actually made the jump when the Frenchman arrived and turned everything upside down. He wasn’t the headline act – Vieira and Petit were running the midfield – but every time he pulled on the red and white he gave you everything. Box-to-box energy, a sweet left foot, proper vision, and the confidence to shoot from anywhere. 49 Premier League appearances, 4 goals, another 27 games off the bench… total 76 outings and 7 goals in Arsenal colours. He was part of that historic ’97/98 Double side, chipping in when it mattered most. Proper squad man who never moaned, just got on with it. By March 2000 the game time had dried up, so off he went to Everton for a small fee. No drama, no big fuss. That’s how it was with Hughes – reliable, humble, and always a Gooner at heart. Not every player gets to score both goals in a crunch derby during a title-winning campaign. Stephen Hughes did exactly that. One for the proper Highbury folklore, one for the old-school WhatsApp groups when we’re reminiscing about the lads who came through the system and left their mark. Absolute servant. Local hero. Still got love from the stands all these years later. Up the Gunners ❤️

Never mind the symbolics. Arsenal lit a fire at their training ground as a motivational image. But it was Manchester City who brought the fire to the game. City dared more and deservedly won. Better principles - more attacking. Better team - more leaders. Better manager - more adventurous and experienced. And so it’s advantage a fired-up City in the title race. Pep Guardiola and his big-game hunters can smell wounded foe, can sense victory will be theirs. City have big players relishing the pressure in the biggest game of the season. Bernardo Silva outstanding, small of frame but huge of heart. He’ll be hugely missed as ball-winning player, creative player, team player and role model. Rodri commanding. Haaland pouncing when opportunity knocked. Cherki dribbling and dazzling. O’Reilly so young but so mature in his positioning and decision-making. Guehi a top defender and leader, such a massively influential signing in January. Arsenal? Second again? They need more than fire now. They need City to slip up. Guardiola’s side do still have to go Everton and Bournemouth but they have the belief and the momentum. They know the way to the finishing line, it's a muscle memory. Arsenal tried hard. They were gritty, good pressing first half, some promising counters but they dropped off, invited City on and Pep’s men need no second invitation. Arsenal invested heavily this season, and will doubtless do so again this summer, as the years of hurt lengthens since the Invincibles. Arteta needs more flair as much as fire. He also needs a re-think on his approach. His subs will come under scrutiny. Arteta inexplicably kept the fading Odegaard on. Odegaard embodies Arsenal’s nice, neat football but doesn’t hurt elite opponents enough. Arteta could have moved Eze central not taken him off. Arsenal will argue fine lines, Havertz had a huge chance at the death, but were fortunate that Gabriel was not sent off for pushing his forehead into Haaland’s. If/when the fire is fully extinguished, the Arsenal inquest will be long and painful. It sounds like it's already begun amongst their fans, their fire snuffed out by City. #MCIARS

@Paul_SLG It’s everywhere. I’ve just had a scheme refused in landscape. Officers wanted to recommend approval but I was told by head of planning to refuse. HoP knew no prospect of getting approved at committee so limited the scope of refusal (and costs liability) they have to defend

Planning committees are supposed to be quasi‑judicial, but decisions are increasingly being made based on political, rather than planning, considerations. Policy‑compliant applications refused. Officer advice ignored. The cost lands on applicants, councils budgets, and families waiting for homes. My latest for Housing Today digs into why, and how a national scheme of delegation could help fix it. Full piece below.

As co-leader of a local planning authority, I can be clear: Green councils are NOT the blocker for delivering housing. We have thousands of unbuilt permissions in our rural district. It is impossible to meet housing need and solve the housing crisis within this profit-led planning system, which benefits developers and landowners and does not serve our communities. @wealdendistrict has delivered 896 council homes in the last two years. We need council housing, at scale, not endless luxury unaffordable housing estates without infrastructure. #votegreen
Farrukh@implausibleblog

Abbie Llewelyn, "Labour have accused the Greens of trying to block at least 42,000 homes being built, including 13,000 affordable homes" Zack Polanski, "Labour have hired a van with a big number on it, I don't know where they got it from" "Labour should be building the homes they promised rather than hiring vans outside Green party conferences" "There was a report yesterday that even the targets Labour set themselves, they are massively missing. If you set a target you should actually hit it" "We do have a housing crisis" "But what we also have is an affordability crisis" "It's about building the right homes, at the right price, at the right place" "What we see all too often with Labour councils is that they are building luxury unaffordable buildings" "They often knock down or destroy communities that are already there in the name of regeneration but don't replace the homes with affordable homes or council homes" "So I would reject the premise that the Greens are blocking any more developments than anyone else is" "But if a development is being blocked because it is an unaffordable luxury development, then I'm proud of any Green party council that does that" "We need to make sure that we are building the homes that people actually need, that are fit to live in, affordable and accessible" "And you only need to look at this Labour government where the Housing Secretary is going for curries with property developers for £2,000" "They are building homes based on vested interests" "They are building for profit" "As opposed to the actual housing needs that people have"
