A story that haunts me about Michelle Obama is when she told People magazine in 2014 that she’d taken a trip to Target, and a woman had dared to ask her for help getting something off a shelf. The story was recounted as part of a wider piece about “racial assumptions.” It stuck with me because I’m tall for a woman (probably not as tall as Michelle), and people ask me for help reaching things all the time. Sometimes I—gasp—even offer if I see them struggling. It has nothing to do with being black and thus mistaken for “the help” and everything to do with being tall. Michelle Obama and other liberal blacks are so cocooned in their little myopic worldview that they can’t even fathom that 99% of the things they complain about are universal experiences—or at least experiences not due or limited to being black. And since then, she’s gone on to prove this even further. Every time I hear from this woman, she’s complaining about race in some absolutely audacious way for a woman who was First Lady of the greatest nation the world has ever seen. Part of me wishes we could invent a Time Machine to send these people back to 1960 or 1860 when they’d clearly be more comfortable and fulfilled and would no longer have to grasp for a racism that isn’t there.

Go look at your window wells today, the recessed metal or plastic channels around basement windows below ground level.
If they don't have a cover or a rough board leaned into them, they might be working as a trap. Toads, chipmunks, snakes, and small birds fall in looking for shelter or food and can't get back out. The walls are too smooth and vertical to climb. Whatever falls in usually dies there from starvation or exposure.
Wildlife rehabbers find animals in window wells regularly, often already in poor shape by the time someone notices. Toads are particularly common victims because they shelter in cool, damp, enclosed spaces during the day, and a window well looks exactly like what they're looking for.
The fix is straightforward. Rigid plastic or metal well covers with drainage holes sit over the opening and cost around twenty to thirty dollars at any hardware store. A rough board or a section of hardware cloth propped at an angle gives anything that does fall in a way to climb out. Neither solution takes more than a few minutes to install.
While you're at it: check them after heavy rain. Flooded wells become drowning traps for anything small that ended up inside, and whatever debris accumulates at the bottom makes the problem worse over time.
Ten minutes this weekend and they stop being a hazard.

In case anyone was wondering, the guy who doesn't know how to clear a semi auto rifle doesn't know how to properly clear a handgun either.
He says the only steps are to remove the magazine and lock the slide back. He then makes a joke that you can finger the chamber "if you want" to check it.
At no point does he ever look into the chamber to visually confirm it is empty. I guess in his world extractors never fail.
Folks who are new to guns I will make this really simple for you. If you want to clear any gun, you perform the clearing process and then LOOK IN THE CHAMBER!
You NEVER skip that step. It is bombproof. If the chamber is visually clear nothing can go wrong that causes it to fire. It's easy. It costs nothing. And it cannot fail. (Unless you are this idiot and skip the visual inspection part)

We had a tenant move out of one of our rental properties and leave behind a mountain of trash.
As awful as that was, it got worse.
They also left behind two cats… to die.
One was locked in the garage with no food and no water.
The other was trapped in the house with no food and had water only because the toilet seat had been left up.
If we hadn’t gone back into that garage for another week or two, that cat would’ve been dead.
I genuinely can’t understand how someone could do that to an animal.
The crazy part?
These cats are unbelievably sweet.
We brought them out to the farm and we’re working to acclimate them into becoming farm cats now. Hopefully they’ll have a much better life ahead of them than the one they came from.
People can leave trash behind.
That can be cleaned up.
Leaving living animals behind to suffer is something entirely different.
