Viruses evolve to become less deadly. They do this for one reason, survival. Kill your host too quickly, and you die with it. Viruses that stay under the radar, discrete and unnoticed, spread further and last far longer. They become less dangerous. instead of being something that the host sees as a life and death problem, it turns into something that you just have to deal with. Addictions are evolving in the same way. Smoking cigarettes is a big problem. Your clothes stink, you cant do it in most places, you have to constantly buy cigarettes and its harm to people is well known. Then bring in vaping. It's far more discrete, leaves little smell, no smoke, can be done almost everywhere (if ur discrete enough). It seems like far less of an issue. But it's still an addiction that negatively impacts people. It's just seemingly far less of a problem. it feels less harmful. Addiction is a predator. It ruins your life. Modern Addictions act much more like parasites. They feed off of you, often times going undiscovered and unnoticed. But they're still feeding off of you. There's no better parallel to this than screentime. Through convenience and value we have managed to introduce an addiction so subtle that it can impact all 24 hours of your day, yet still potent enough to impact you dramatically over a long time frame. It feels productive. It feels like you're filling your time up with something rather than laying idle or being bored. Yet this is all just a cloak. The conversations you have with friends change, as you choose simple and quicker topics to ensure you can break off to check your phone if need be. The things you fill your time with changes too. This is probably the worst of all. Think about how many valuable nutrients there are in whole foods. Then think about how a food item consisting of 100% protein and nothing else is lacking all of these things. it's the same with entertainment. You replace nutrient rich entertainment and activities that have boundless side effect benefits with much more sanitized and efficient entertainment that is specialized in providing dopamine, and not much else. dopamine addiction has evolved to become far more subtle, quietly taking over our lives. Unnoticed and undisturbed. In that process we are swapping the things that add flavor and spice to life. We're trading away the depths of humanity for shallow drips of dopamine.
