Where I am right now : All Natural Materials in Oaxaca Oaxaca Mexico is touristy, and with that comes hotels and Air B n Bs. Some done well, and others……terrible! I’m in a place now made of all natural materials, good craftsmanship, and love. A good combination for any build. Some people like this style, and there is a reason why…..it feels natural. Yet, not done well it can easily feel “hokey”. Pic #1 - walls are made of “adobe” and hand formed. Colored glass insets make for great light. Bamboo framing and clerestory windows lift the roof up off the cottage. Making it feel light and spacious in a small space. Pic # 2 - materials coming together. Spliced bamboo structure, solid farmed hardwood ship lap walls, adobe, and glass. The solid bottom half of the wall, raising up to clerestory windows is a really nice way to lift a space up. Pic # 3 - details: interior wall to bathroom sliding door. Adobe wall details with bamboo insets. Farmed solid wood door frame with woven jute panels. Put our hands on things in a home is what we do, making those surfaces with natural materials is what we inherently feel comfortable with.

I lived in SB, my kids live there now. The family home is a George Washington Smith. You are right to say SB, but honestly…..there’s no comparison. SB looks cool…..but it is more of a stage set. This down here is real….colorful….full of life. I don’t see that in SB, unless I’m down in the Mexican part of town! Here’s our house in SB…..I know the style!

@shagbark_hick Weather is abysmal in the southwest. The southeast too for that matter. Endless, unrelenting heat. I miss New England weather and seasons. The darkness during winter never bothered me. The COL is just too unreasonable, but as far as the land and climate, I love it.

If I had to be a "normie," I'd do it in the Southwest. If you're gonna obey lots of tiny rules, pay taxes, live by the clock, the commute, and the boss, you might as well have an orange tree in your yard, no humid heat or snowy driving, great food. Normies in states like NJ or MA just seem to be punishing themselves for no reason. Salty roads, horrid taxes, slushy grey winters, icy commutes, dark when you go to work and dark when you get home. No orange trees, no good tacos. Muggy summers, awful pollen. By contrast I totally get the whole "Sun Belt" thing. Would make "the 4HL" at least somewhat tolerable if I had to do it.
