Don’t forget about Austin Metcalf and how the family of a boy charged with first degree murder raised over 500k in public donations allocated for defense funds which ended up being used on luxury housing.
On April 2, 2025, a 17 year old was fatally stabbed during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The incident occurred under a team tent during a rain delay.
According to witnesses and police reports, Metcalf asked another student, Karmelo Anthony, to move from a tent area designated for his team. The two did not know each other prior to the encounter. What followed was a brief verbal exchange that escalated quickly. Witnesses state Anthony warned Metcalf not to touch him. Moments later, after physical contact was allegedly made, Anthony produced a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.
Metcalf collapsed in his twin brother’s arms and died at the scene. Anthony remained at the scene and was taken into custody. He reportedly admitted to the act but claimed he was acting in self defense.
The investigation that followed was extensive. Law enforcement interviewed more than 70 witnesses, including students, athletes, and coaches who were present at the meet. Surveillance footage from the stadium was obtained, though it provides only a distant and limited view of the incident. Investigators also collected physical evidence, including the knife, and the medical examiner confirmed that Metcalf died from a single fatal stab wound to the chest.
Anthony was charged with first degree murder and was formally indicted by a grand jury on June 24, 2025. He has pleaded not guilty and continues to assert that he acted in self defense. Because he was 17 at the time of the incident, he is being tried as an adult under Texas law. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years or life in prison.
He was initially held on a $1 million bond, which was later reduced to $250,000. Anthony’s family launched a fundraiser on the platform GiveSendGo. The campaign went viral and rapidly raised over $500,000, drawing national attention and intense scrutiny.
According to statements from the family and reporting at the time, the funds were intended primarily for legal defense but were not limited strictly to attorney fees. The family indicated that the money could also be used for relocation, security, counseling, and general living expenses due to the threats and disruption caused by the case. This detail, that the money was not exclusively reserved for legal costs, became a central point of controversy. He was subsequently released under strict conditions that include house arrest, electronic ankle monitoring, constant supervision, and no contact with the Metcalf family. Due to threats and the high-profile nature of the case, he and his family relocated to an undisclosed luxury residence. A gag order has also been issued, preventing attorneys, witnesses, and officials from publicly discussing the case.
At present, the case remains in the pre trial phase. Both the prosecution and defense are engaged in discovery, exchanging evidence and preparing legal strategies. Motions are expected to be filed regarding what evidence can be introduced at trial, including potential challenges related to surveillance footage and witness testimony.
The jury trial is currently scheduled to begin on June 1, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Collin County District Court.
