This bug spray billboard is actually a giant insect trap

These are echinoderms — close relatives of starfish (sea stars) and brittle stars — but with arms that repeatedly branch into smaller and smaller tendrils, creating that tangled, net-like or fractal appearance. When alive and in the water, they spread out those super-fine branches to form a living “basket” or mesh that catches drifting plankton and small organisms from the current. Out of water, they collapse into a crumpled, brownish heap that looks eerily like a discarded fishing net, coral fan, or some weird alien sponge/structure — which is exactly why videos like this go viral with “meanwhile the ocean” captions. They’re harmless to humans (no sting like some corals), but they’re deep-water creatures and don’t survive long when brought to the surface. Fishermen occasionally haul them up accidentally in nets or on lines, especially in cooler or deeper coastal waters.
