The left-wing activist in charge of building Gavin Newsom's $114 Million wildlife bridge has zero experience in construction or engineering - and is blaming President Donald Trump for blown deadlines and skyrocketing costs. Critics say she has turned what was supposed to be a simple “cougar and butterfly bridge” into a textbook example of waste, fraud, abuse and incompetence. The project was supposed to connect fragmented habitats in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills. It was promoted as the world’s largest wildlife overpass, and sold to taxpayers as essential in saving a small, isolated population of mountain lions. At the same time, it was sold as a place for all wildlife from butterflies and lizards to deer and birds. They broke ground under Newsom's watch in 2022, with a projected completion date in 2025. Since then, costs have spiked to $114 million with delays pushing the opening back to November of this year, or later, with construction still happening as of this month. Critics say the project turned into a jobs program for environmental nonprofits, complete with specialized roles for soil scientists, fungi experts, and native plant nurseries. Pratt, the leader of the project, does not have any prior background or experience in building bridges, construction, or civil engineering, the only experience she has is in environmental advocacy.
