@DannyDrinksWine My favourite actor. Such extraordinary presence, that unique voice and an unrivalled ability to play suave menace. That said, his Norman Maine in the 1954 A Star Is Born is arguably his finest hour - should have won an Oscar.

@nick_newsum Like the champion opener he is, he’ll be settling in for bed and breakfast!

@Cullivanpeter @JosePuliampatta A legendary all round aircraft for a legendary allrounder.

@northumbriana The PM, Lord Palmerston, was invited to the opening ceremony of the Metropolitan Line in January 1863 but, remembering William Huskisson at the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway in 1830, he sent the Chancellor of the Exchequer, William Gladstone instead;

The London Underground is so old that its first passengers could take the tube to go and watch public hangings.

What historical fact sounds fake but is true?

@d_ktalkballs A very fine bat indeed for Radley, Cambridge, Sussex and England.

@pushkar_g_singh @JosePuliampatta Not sure if he flew jets but he did fly Mosquitos for the RAAF. He did play cricket in the UK (on at least one occasion not too long after crash landing his aircraft!) but not I think in India.
English

@Cullivanpeter @JosePuliampatta Knew how to fly a fighter jet or two. Did he play cricket in India during WW2?
English

@JosePuliampatta My pleasure. He originally wanted to be a jockey but a growth spurt put paid to that dream. He originally made his reputation as a batsman for the Victorian XI. That said he retained a love of racing his whole life.

@Cullivanpeter Thanks for the great additional info, Peter👍🙏

@BumbleCricket @JamieMagill5 Closey’s autobiography definitely worth a punt as are Douglas Jardine Spartan Cricketer and Bradman and the 1930 Australians.

Since the flavour of the season seems to be, 'Only 1% of people can identify the player', I thought I'd chime in as well.
Please identify the players, the two teams, the venue & the year.

Taylor second best for me behind Ian Chappell. Australian cricket at a very low ebb after the 0-4 shellacking in SA in 1970 and a poor series vs Ray Illingworth’s England in 1970/71, the last Test of which saw Chappell take the helm. He restored the team’spride and spirit most notably during the 1-2 loss to a very strong World XI in 1971/72 and the shared series in England in 1972. Often forgotten that he had Lille and Thomson for only 2 series - home and away vs England in 1974/75 and 1975.
He was always looking to win, right from the toss with an aggressive mindset. Tactically very astute in reading the game, a backer of hunches and generally a few moves ahead of his opposing captain, a master at building pressure in the field and the best skipper I have seen bar none at defending low totals. A superb leader and reader of men, a tough nut to crack at no 3 and a phenomenal 1st slip.

In terms of purely tactical nous, Mark Taylor is the best AUS captain I have seen. Taylor also came from a time when the captain had enough power in terms of taking decisions.
In modern times, Steve Smith has some flair for captaincy.
AUS captains.
zuzu@enigmazuzu278
@Fancricket12 I have seen this discussion on beard over cricket podcast that ponting was probably just an average captain but that team was insanely good. I felt the same way about surya too this ipl(not commenting on his performance) just captaincy.

@CraigNelsy @vkc1000 Great testament to fitness trainer Dennis Waight’s physical training programme!
English

@vkc1000 I wish he had played for my Aussie Rule team. Mikey has a fantastic kicking action. And he was fast and skillfull.
He would have been a champ in a Richmond Tigers Jersey lol
English

@Marcus60s70s80s @Fancricket12 His fellow Australian Bill Alley who was a Somerset stalwart for many years.

@Fancricket12 It’s an umpire in the UK, so I guess it was 1979 (WC summer) or 1981

Our Rodney Hogg sir; related to perhaps his debut Test series v England. This was the time when AUS ended up losing their key players to Packer. Before playing for AUS, he was a milkman.
