@TheVietGwent Yes, sadly. We see it as such now, but I wager Egypt/Suez was seen as *pivotal* to the war effort and it's possible loss cataclysmic in a way that the fall of Singapore - while humiliating - could not match.

@d_ktalkballs Things would have turned out differently if Churchill had placed stronger air & land forces in Malaya. Not a single tank or Spitfire or Hurricane…?!

We’ll never know what caused the deflagration of her rear magazines and, even if we did, one suspects it would turn out to be more complicated than weak deck armour, but an excellent 🧵 about HMS Hood 👇
Hidden History@HiddenHistoryYT

🧵HMS Hood: the largest warship in the world for 20 years, the pride of the Royal Navy, and the site of its single greatest loss of life. Here's the full story of "The Mighty Hood" from drawing board to the bottom of the Denmark Strait 👇

@TheVietGwent Quite - with the RN badly stretched, ideal time for them. I always think things could've looked so different had the Soviets lost at Khalkhin Gol and Japan focused their efforts in Siberia. They'd have not needed to look south and Barbarossa would've turned out differently.

@d_ktalkballs Smuts had warned in the 1920s that the post-Washington Treaty “Singapore Strategy” was hopelessly flawed. It was all well and good building a big naval base and sending the Home & Med fleets out, but Japan would only attack if others were already tying down those two fleets.

@TheVietGwent Agree all round mate. I've actually visited the Box in Singapore, Percival's HQ and it's sobering indeed. There were options, but none of them were good.

@d_ktalkballs Any battleship arriving in Singapore in early Dec 1941 was in deep trouble. Phillips had no accurate assessment of IJN aviation capabilities in Indo-China and, even if he did, he was still not in a position to abandon Brooke-Popham, Pulford & Percival to their fates.

@TheVietGwent The Stringbag - what a machine. And Rodney would *devastate* Bismarck from point blank. Yes, Renown got a thorough refit but she had a *relatively* quiet war all things considered. Poor old PoW however...born under an unlucky star.

@d_ktalkballs Repulse had interwar work, but not the full Queen Anne’s mansions reconstruction of Renown. Yes, Ark Royal’s stringbags brought the slow Rodney into the game.

@TheVietGwent I love Repulse, she was *gorgeous* but didn't she get a serious refit in the interwar period? Can't think. Fairly sure she was detached for lack of fuel before the pursuit group caught the enemy. And effectively replaced by everyone's favourite Queen Anne's mansions, Rodney.

@d_ktalkballs Absolutely. Folk criticise the Hood & Prince of Wales pairing, but the real risk was the other squadron and having to pair King George V with Repulse for a possible big gun surface engagement. Repulse was far more of a battlecruiser than Hood ever was.

@TheVietGwent Quite so. Terrible weather helped the enemy there. Had Holland crossed the enemy's T, with the twins closing in to attack with torpedoes as well, we'd be talking about a different outcome.

@d_ktalkballs Yes, HMS Suffolk losing radar contact for several hours was the key moment in that engagement and wrecked Holland’s cross the enemy’s T plan.

@TheVietGwent The instantaneous loss of Hood did unjustly burnish Bismarck's legend imo; after 24 May, Bismarck couldn't hit a barn door. Hood's loss was utterly flukish. Had the East Anglian twins not lost radar contact in rank weather on 23 May, Holland was set to cross the enemy's T.

@d_ktalkballs People too easily dismiss the possibility of Hood’s belt armour being penetrated because, at that angle, there’s a clear path for a 15” shell through the machinery spaces to the bulkhead and the rear 4” magazine.

The Anglo-Japanese Alliance should have never ended. Had the alliance remained, there would have been no Pacific theatre in WW2 and both empires could well have lasted into the 21st Century.

@thedailyjaws This isn't and has never been a dilemma, the film makes it obvious as you say. The big Jaws dilemma is - what did happen to Ben Gardner's eye?

@FXMC1957 I think the SNP helped swing this vote, thus enabling over a decade of Mrs T. I wonder if they rued that at any time.

Zak Crawley's NZ tour of 2024 was a horror show and was disturbing to witness live. Across the series, he was 10-6 against Matt Henry. He must be having palpitations ahead of this summer. It's going to be another bloodbath. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇳🇿
